Water & Air

Water Consumption [POJK51 F.8]
The Company uses water for tin ore mining activities, spraying transportation areas to reduce dust, and for domestic purposes both in operational sites and offices. The water used by the Company for the production process comes from several sources, such as river water, groundwater, and rainwater, which is shared with the surrounding community. The Company strives to limit the volume of water extraction from these sources below the set consumption threshold. This is implemented in order to preserve the ecosystem around the mining area. The Company always calculates the volume of water consumption by installing measurement tools at each water source location on a regular basis. [303-1] [303-3]

All water (100%) used in onshore mining operations is recycled water treated through the application of a closed water circulation system (closed system). This is conducted to enable the Company in ensuring the quality of water which at the end of the production process will be returned to the open flow. Meanwhile, to determine the volume of recycled water, the Company utilizes data from the flowmeter or rotameter as an instrument to record the flow rate of fluid volume - including water – installed in the water management system. At the end of the reporting period, the total consumption of recycled water by the Company has decreased by 401 megaliters. This was due to the efficiency of water consumption and the decrease in water digestion load. [303-4]

Water Management Effort [303-1, 303-2]

The Company has a policy of water consumption, control, supervision, monitoring, and regular evaluation through a conservation approach, efficiency of water resources, as well as water recycling. The Company strives to optimize its water consumption in every operational activity. Throughout 2022, the Company has carried out a number of water management efforts efficiently, including :

  1. Closed circulation in the casting process.
  2. Closed circulation in the tin ore washing process.
  3. Scheduling the turn-on time of water pumps for employee housing and public facilities.
  4. Modification of the tapping channel.
  5. Closed circulation in the granulation process.
  6. Valve settings in the granulation tub.
  7. Utilization of used water from public facilities for watering plants.
  8. Water recirculation in the electrolytic refining process.
  9. Raising the floodgates in the reservoir as a barrier to water runoff.
  10. The efficiency of engine water cooling process in PLTD with PLNization.

Emissions Containing Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) [305-7]

The Company pays attention to the emission from equipment that contains ozone-depleting substances (Ozone Depleting Substances/ODS) that come from the use of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-based refrigerants commonly used in room temperature control (AC) machines. Therefore, the Company has replaced the use of ozone-depleting chemicals, i.e. CFCs, which contain chlorine (Chlor), fluorine (Fluoro), and carbon (Carbon) with environmentally friendly hydrocarbons which gradually will reduce the amount of generated emissions.

Other Emissions [305-7]

Emission testing of stationary emission sources, of these parameters: Particulates, SO2, NOX, HCI, NH3, Pb, Sn, CO, and TVOC which are conducted by the Company on a regular basis. The source of stationary emissions comes from supporting equipment and chimney emissions from PLTD activities. The emissions from chimneys are managed by installing air pollutant control facilities in the form of Filter Bags. Thus, the chimney emissions that come out into the environment are still within the government's chimney Emission Quality Standards (BME). The initiatives implemented to reduce other gas emissions are by increasing the efficiency of generator usage, routine maintenance of generators, and electricity usage in the baghouse. The Company also carries out various initiatives to reduce other emissions, such as keeping records of emission measurements under the stipulated environmental quality standards, as shown in the table of chimney emissions measurement at the Metallurgical Unit below:
