Community Development and Empowerment Program

Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) [413-1, 413-2] 

In 2023, the Company disbursed Rp14.5 billion to support the PPM Program aiming to improve the skills of the locals, so they can improve their welfare. The realization of the PPM Program in 2023 included:

1. Pemali Boarding School Program
Pemali Boarding School (PBS) established in 2000 accepts students from varied economic backgrounds, both well-off and underprivileged, as long as they have achievements. Since 2017, PT TIMAH Tbk has changed the concept of admission, giving priority to underprivileged students with achievements. They come from Bangka Belitung Island, Karimun Regency (Riau Islands Province), and Meranti Regency (Riau Province). Until 2023, the alumni were 851 people, with various professions such as teachers, doctors, lecturers, police, BUMN employees, and the private sector. Currently, 107 students live in the dormitory and attend SMA Negeri 1 Pemali in Bangka Regency.

2. Fishing Ground
The Fishing Ground Program provides a sustainable contribution to coastal communities affected by mining activities. The program began at Rebo Beach in November 2020 with 101 FADs and involved the collaboration with fishermen, the Marine and Fisheries Service and the University of Bangka Belitung scholars providing evaluation. In 2023, the program was expanded with the removal of 60 FADs in Aik Antu Deniang Village and 170 FADs in Rebo Village.

3. Indigenous Community Preservation Program in the Mining Sites
In terms of customary preservation, the Company has made initial approaches to the Mapor indigenous community in Gunung Muda Village, Belinyu District, Bangka. This approach began in 2021 with research and writing a book about the community, followed by the construction of seven memarong traditional houses that can be used as lodging. In addition, we equipped the indigenous community with training in weaving, eco-print batik, and local guides to improve their economic independence in tourism. The Company also provides legal support to the indigenous community by assisting with notarization, such as the ratification of the Deed of Establishment of the Mapur Customary Institution Association, Deed of Establishment of the Gebong Mamarong Mapor Foundation, Submission of the Foundation Name, and Submission of the Association Name.

4. Vulnerable Group Social Security Program
 The Company maintains harmonious relationships with stakeholders, especially with fishermen, and provides them with social security, namely BPJS Employment. This program started in 2022, and in 2023 as many as 450 fishermen in the Company’s operational sites had received social security. 

5. PELAUT POS Program (Polyculture Silvofishery) Empowerment of Sawang Laut Fishermen
The Company took the initiative to improve the quality of life of the community through the POS PELAUT Program (Polyculture Silvofisher y as Sawang Laut Fishermen Empowerment) in Sawang Laut Village, West Kundur District, Karimun Regency, since 2020. This program involves fishermen who are empowered through Pokdakan Tuah Bersatu, with activities to cultivate white snapper and suction snails simultaneously in the mangrove ecosystem area. This is in line with the 2030 agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the Multi-Party Partnership (KMP), aiming to empower the locals and improve their life quality and independence.

6. Salt Cultivation Program
The Company supports sustainable development in the environmental aspect through the Salt Program in East Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province. This program is the first in the region and involves the MGL Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) of Padang Village with 18 members and collaborates with the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office. In 2023, this program was strengthened with the addition of vlogs to increase salt production.

7.  NABATI PROTEIN (Integrated Program for Pineapple Innovation Badau Belitung Indonesia)
The Company implements the Community Empowerment Program (PPM) by strengthening the participation of communities/farmer groups in Badau Village, Badau District, and Belitung Regency. The program includes the Development of Community Business Centers based on local resources and the use of ex-mining land. This program supports the locals with agricultural skills and increases their income by cultivating their land. 

8. BUDAYA MENAWAN community empowerment program (Eco-friendly Merawang Chicken Farm)
The empowerment program in Air Limau Village and Belo Laut Village, Muntok District, West Bangka Regency since 2020 aims to improve food security and the welfare of housewives. The program empowers the Limau Jaya Women’s Group and the Perkasa Women’s Group through the cultivation of chickens, egg hatching, composting, feed crop farming, making alternative feed, and making chicken probiotics with the principle of zero waste.
