Biodiversity Conservation and Protection

The Company aims to minimize negative impacts on the environment and biodiversity by integrating conservation efforts into its operations and business model. We work to maintain the biodiversity of animals and plants in the areas we manage, including production forest areas.

Operational Sites Adjacent to Protected Areas and Areas with High Biodiversity Values [304-1, 304-2][EM-MM-160a.3]

Our operations are spread across several regions in Indonesia and in 2 overseas countries. In Indonesia, we note that 0.46% of the Company’s onshore IUP area is located in protected areas, namely Conservation Forest (HK) and Protected Forest (HL). However, we strive to maintain protected areas and/or areas with high biodiversity value (nature reserves, wildlife reserves, and protected forests), so that there are no operating areas adjacent to these protected areas and no invasive species. This also shows that our operational activities have no direct or indirect impact on biodiversity and the environment. Our efforts in maintaining the environment so that it is not affected by operational activities by carrying out mitigation such as wastewater management before being discharged into the environment and some have been reused so that it does not affect the ground level meter. Currently, the operational locations that are owned, leased, and managed, are as follows: [304-1, 304-2]

Our land mining business permit area covers a total operational area of 288,638 hectares, including subsurface land.   We adhere to the ICMM principles, which prohibit us from exploring or opening new mines in world heritage areas. Additionally, we have implemented post-mining reclamation to mitigate the risks and impacts of biodiversity loss. [304-1]

Conservation of Endangered Species at the Operational Sites [2-27][EM-MM-160a.1][EM-MM-160a.3]

In our operational sites, there are diverse species of conserved flora and fauna; some of them are listed in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), CITES, and the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P106 of 2018 on Protected Plant and Animal Species. Based on the identified data, we protect and conserve such species.

We monitor biodiversity in the operation sites and the results of biodiversity monitoring in Bangka Island waters show that the average diversity index is 1.84 (H’>1). Meanwhile, the uniformity index in Bangka Island waters is relatively stable (E’<1). The monitoring results indicate that certain species do not dominate the ecosystem. Until now, the Company’s operational area has no potential for Acid Rock Drainage (ACD), so we have not conducted computer simulations related to ARD. [304-1,304-2][EM-MM-160a.2]

The monitoring shows there are reversibility and irreversibility impacts on the affected species from positive impacts. The 5 species are Lutjanus russelli, Diagramma pictum, Arothron stellatus, Pentapodus setosus, and Apogon sp, with the range of affected areas included in the scope of the Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) study. The duration of the impact is up to 2 years. [304-1]

Land Rehabilitation around the Operational Sites [304-2, 304-3][EM-MM-160a.1][EM-MM-160a.2]
Our operational activities require water, with sources coming from rainwater collected in sediment ponds, as well as surface water sources, so we consistently carry out land rehabilitation programs. The purpose of the rehabilitation program is to increase the carrying capacity of the ecosystem while maintaining the availability of water around the operational area. In addition, we establish buf fer zones to reduce the impact of mining activities and accelerate the return of land conditions according to their designation. These buf fer zones have been established around areas directly adjacent to protected forests, watersheds, and revegetated areas that have been successfully restored to tropical forests, complete with free-flowing wildlife populations.
