KUNDUR – To meet the increasingly challenging tin ore production targets, PT Timah continues to encourage all employees to work hard and work smart with unity and togetherness. One of the innovative efforts being implemented in the field is that of Joni Kambia, Department Head of KIP 99, who operates in the waters of Kundur.
Through a more humanistic approach and attention to detail, Joni has successfully changed the mindset of the entire KIP 99 crew, encouraging them to see their work not just as a routine, but as a challenge that can be tackled with enthusiasm and innovation. With a principle of mutual support and never overlooking the small things that could lead to losses, the changes being implemented are beginning to show encouraging results.
Joni Kambia, known as a passionate young leader, admits that starting change in the workplace is not easy. However, he believes that with collaboration, attention to safety, and efficiency, every change—no matter how small—can have a significant impact.
One of the first steps Joni took was to make Safety Talk or Safety Meetings, which are held regularly, an opportunity for mutual reminders. During these sessions, the KIP 99 crew is reminded to prioritize safety at work and with equipment, while also reducing production costs through better efficiency. Additionally, Joni emphasizes the importance of loving the job, which fosters a positive spirit in carrying out daily tasks. Comfortable facilities aboard the vessel were also introduced to create a better working environment and support productivity.
Moreover, Joni led an innovation in improving Remaining Processing Results or SHP, the by-product of the processing process. Previously, unused by-products were discarded into the sea. Now, by creating a more efficient SHP collection system, production has surged dramatically. The result: SHP production, which was previously only 500 sacks, has now skyrocketed to 2,331 sacks.
This effort's success has been driven by operational changes and strong management support, which has been a key factor in achieving these results. PT Timah’s management has backed the initiative to reward Aplus teams who reach a production of 25 kampil per Aplus and supported the SHP program to minimize potential losses, no matter how small. With this backing, KIP 99 has now been able to maximize the potential of its location and the tin reserves available, including the former operational area of KK Bangka 2, which has proven to have excellent reserves.
