PT Timah and Batu Kemiri Fishermen's Group Deploy Dozens of Fish Aggregating Devices in Central Bangka

CENTRAL BANGKA – To preserve coastal ecosystems and enhance fishermen's catches, PT Timah Tbk deployed fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the waters of Menuang, Central Bangka Regency, on Wednesday (18/12/2024).

Collaborating with the Batu Kemiri Fishermen's Group in Baskara Bakti Village, PT Timah submerged 73 FADs across two points in the Menuang waters.

The deployed FADs are expected to serve as gathering spots, shelters, and breeding grounds for marine life.

In recent years, PT Timah has actively collaborated with fishermen’s groups to deploy FADs within the company’s operational areas, supporting the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

Bahdir Effendi, Head of Baskara Bakti Village, expressed hope that the FAD deployment would help sustain marine ecosystems.

"The FAD deployment is expected to enrich coral reefs and provide a habitat for fish to breed, enabling more fish populations to grow in our seas," he said.

He added that the initiative could boost the economic growth of Baskara Bakti Village.

"With these FADs, our fishermen will find it easier to catch fish without venturing far from the waters of Baskara Bakti Village," he explained.

Bahdir also expressed his hope that PT Timah would continue collaborating with fishermen to deploy FADs in other locations.

Efforts like these aim to create synergy between the company's business activities and environmental interests, benefiting environmental sustainability and empowering communities around the company’s operational areas. (*)
