BANGKA -- As part of the ongoing World Environment Day celebrations, PT Timah Tbk, through its North Bangka Area Division, collaborated with the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) of Rambak Village to conduct a beach cleanup and plastic waste collection on Wednesday (11/6/2025)
In addition to the beach cleanup, PT Timah also held a tree planting activity and provided sanitation equipment. PT Timah employees, together with the local community and Pokdarwis members, worked together to clean the coastal area.
The event aimed not only to maintain beach cleanliness but also to strengthen the coastal ecosystem by planting Ketapang Kencana and Coconut trees.
The tree planting was carried out symbolically with the community, reflecting a joint commitment to environmental conservation and enhancing the natural tourism appeal of Rambak.
Ismir Rachmaddinianto, Head of the Bangka Regency Environmental Office, said the effort to collect plastic waste carried out by PT Timah and Pokdarwis aligns with the 2025 World Environment Day theme: “Stop Plastic Pollution.”
He appreciated PT Timah’s environmental conservation efforts, saying such initiatives also serve to educate the public that environmental preservation is a shared responsibility.
“This activity is part of our joint effort to maintain environmental cleanliness, especially in coastal areas. By involving the community and various stakeholders, we hope to raise awareness that protecting the environment is not just the government’s duty—it’s a collective responsibility,” he said.
He explained that in Bangka Regency, only about 15.9 percent of plastic waste is currently managed, mostly by waste collectors and waste banks. Many types of plastic waste still hold value but are not yet optimally processed.
He added that not all plastic waste can be processed, such as tarpaulin plastics, jumbo bags, and sachet packaging, which fall under the category of non-recyclable waste. However, a solution is being developed in collaboration with the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI) to process non-recyclable waste into biosolar through a pyrolysis method in Air Duren Village, Mendo Barat District.
From the cleanup activity, a total of 32.9 kilograms of plastic waste was collected, weighed, and handed over to the Waste Bank managed by the Bangka Regency Environmental Office.
PT Timah Tbk’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, said that similar beach cleanup and plastic waste collection activities were also carried out last week in the Kundur Area Division.
“The World Environment Day series is being held at several operational sites of the company, including activities such as education on reducing plastic use, mangrove and productive tree planting, and World Environment Day ceremonies,” he said.
Anggi emphasized that environmental conservation efforts are not limited to World Environment Day. PT Timah continuously implements environmental management programs through activities such as reclamation, reforestation, the use of renewable energy, carbon emission reduction, and more.
The event also served as an opportunity to introduce Batu Tunggal Beach as a new tourism destination in Rambak Village. This initiative is expected to attract tourists while fostering collective awareness of the importance of environmental preservation as a part of local identity and tourism assets.
