Turning Former Mining Land into a Wildlife Conservation Area, PT TIMAH and PPS Alobi Air Jangkang Work Together to Protect Wildlife

BANGKA -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk, in collaboration with the ALOBI Foundation through the Alobi Air Jangkang Wildlife Rescue Center (PPS), continues to support wildlife conservation through rescue, rehabilitation, and release programs aimed at returning wild animals to their natural habitats.

Located on former PT TIMAH mining land, PPS Alobi Air Jangkang has become a rehabilitation center for hundreds of protected wild animals. From 2018 through October 2026, PT TIMAH and the ALOBI Foundation have rehabilitated and released 6,751 animals back into the wild.

Andre Septian, Manager of PPS Alobi Air Jangkang, said that the partnership with PT TIMAH plays an important role in ensuring the continuity of wildlife rescue and care activities in the Bangka Belitung Islands.

According to Andre, rescue operations typically begin with reports from local communities, the confiscation of illegally held wildlife, or animal relocation efforts. Rescued animals are then brought to PPS Alobi Air Jangkang for health examinations and rehabilitation based on their individual conditions.

"PPS Alobi Air Jangkang rescues wild animals based on reports from the community. The animals most frequently reported include slow lorises and tarsiers. We then bring these animals to PPS Alobi Air Jangkang for medical examinations and rehabilitation," Andre explained.

He emphasized that rescue efforts do not end once an animal has been evacuated. Each animal undergoes regular monitoring, including health examinations to assess its physical condition. Animals requiring additional care receive rehabilitation until they are declared healthy and ready to be released back into their natural habitats.

Andre noted that PT TIMAH's support plays a significant role in sustaining the operations of PPS Alobi Air Jangkang. This support includes providing facilities and infrastructure, animal feed, and operational funding for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and release activities.

"Currently, 71 animals are undergoing rehabilitation at PPS Alobi Air Jangkang, including cockatoos, green peafowl, bears, binturongs, parrots, eagles, crocodiles, slow lorises, and tarsiers," he said.

Andre expressed hope that the collaboration with PT TIMAH would continue to grow stronger, ensuring the sustainability of wildlife protection and conservation efforts in the Bangka Belitung Islands.

"We hope that our partnership and collaboration with PT TIMAH will continue, particularly in supporting the facilities and operations needed for wildlife rescue. Through our joint efforts, we hope to further strengthen wildlife protection and conservation initiatives in Bangka," he concluded. (*)
