Together with PT Timah, the Bestari Advanced Hydroponic Group Strengthens Food Security from the Village

KUNDUR – The Bestari Advanced Hydroponic Group, supported by PT Timah, continues to grow. They have successfully cultivated various types of vegetables to enhance food security in Sawang Laut Village, Riau Islands Province.

This hydroponic program not only aims to support food security but also reflects the company’s commitment to empowering women's groups to improve the community’s economy.

Initially, PT Timah assisted them in developing hydroponic farming to support food security. As an island region, they still rely on other areas to meet their vegetable needs.

After receiving guidance from PT Timah, they have expanded the variety of vegetables they grow, and their yields continue to increase.

Sartini, Chairperson of the Bestari Advanced Hydroponic Group, shared that since receiving support from PT Timah, they have successfully harvested vegetables six times.

"We have harvested six times. At first, we only planted bok choy, with one table producing up to 30 kg per harvest, and we had two tables. Now, we grow many types of vegetables such as mustard greens, bok choy, lettuce, and celery," she said when contacted on Monday (17/2/2025).

Sartini mentioned that their hydroponic farming has benefited group members, providing not only knowledge but also economic gains.

"We used to be just housewives, but now we have become productive through PT Timah’s hydroponic farming program. When we harvest, we earn income for our group members," she explained.

Currently, Sartini said they are beginning to cultivate chili peppers, as their high price makes it beneficial to produce them locally.

"From our hydroponic farming, we are expanding further by purchasing polybags to grow chili peppers. Group members will plant them in their home yards, and we will also encourage the wider community to do the same," she added.

With training and support from PT Timah Tbk, members of the Bestari Advanced Hydroponic Group have been able to enhance food security by meeting the community’s vegetable needs.

"The vegetables we produce are sold to the community, small shops, and even pre-ordered. Demand is quite high, and we are continuously working to develop agricultural products together with women’s groups," she noted.

Sartini feels fortunate that their group has received full support from PT Timah, enabling her and other women to be more productive and gain knowledge about hydroponic farming.

"PT Timah has provided us with incredible guidance, and we have truly felt the benefits. Not only have we gained more knowledge, but it has also had a positive economic impact on us as a women’s group," she concluded. (*)
