PANGKALPINANG -- PT TIMAH Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting the nation’s wildlife. In collaboration with the Wildlife Rescue Center (PPS) Alobi, the company actively supports efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release wild animals back into their natural habitats.
PPS Alobi, located in the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village, sits on former mining land managed by PT TIMAH Tbk and has been transformed into an integrated area that includes agriculture, fisheries, and wildlife rehabilitation facilities.
Since its establishment in 2018, PPS Alobi has rehabilitated hundreds of wild animals of various species. Currently, about 112 animals are still undergoing rehabilitation. Most of them are government-confiscated animals from law enforcement actions, including eagles, crocodiles in conflict with humans, sun bears, binturongs, slow lorises, sambar deer, barking deer, tarsiers, and mouse deer.
As a member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, PT TIMAH Tbk plays an active role in supporting these rehabilitation activities. This reflects the company’s commitment to environmental conservation, including wildlife preservation.
“To protect and love our national flora and fauna means we must also preserve them. PPS is not a zoo—it’s a place to help animals recover so they can return to the wild and become part of their ecosystem again,” said PPS Alobi Manager, Endy R. Yusuf.
During the rehabilitation process, PPS Alobi and PT TIMAH Tbk focus not only on physical healing but also on restoring the animals’ natural instincts so they are ready for release. For instance, gibbons are given fruit still wrapped in leaves to encourage them to learn how to forage and open their own food, just as they would in the wild.
The rehabilitation efforts also involve empowering local communities, from providing animal feed to cultivating forage plants such as calliandra. Local residents also contribute—for example, cattle farmers donate livestock remains to feed crocodiles or other carnivorous animals.
Wildlife plays a vital role in maintaining forest ecosystem balance, such as dispersing seeds, aiding in natural pollination, and controlling other animal populations.
Through wildlife conservation efforts, PT TIMAH Tbk and PPS Alobi aim to ensure that these ecological functions continue, allowing humans to benefit from a well-preserved natural environment.
“When nature is protected, it will protect us in return. That’s why it’s so important to return animals to their natural habitats,” Endy added.
However, these conservation efforts still face major challenges, particularly deforestation caused by human activities, including illegal mining. Uncontrolled activities have led to the loss of wildlife habitats and an increase in human-wildlife conflicts, such as crocodile encounters.
“In the past two years, there has been at least one case of human-crocodile conflict each month in the coastal areas of Bangka Belitung,” he said.
As a state-owned mining company that manages tin resources, PT TIMAH Tbk recognizes its great responsibility toward the environment. Through various programs, the company practices green mining and post-mining land reclamation to restore ecological functions.
These efforts include releasing rehabilitated animals into reclaimed areas that have been reforested, creating new ecosystems that are both productive and capable of supporting wildlife.
Through these concrete actions, PT TIMAH Tbk continues to affirm its commitment to being a mining company that is not only economically productive but also responsible for wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.
