Together with Fishermen, PT Timah Tbk Runs a Fishing Ground Program in Bangka Island Waters

PANGKALPINANG -- To support the local marine and fisheries industry, PT Timah Tbk through its Corporate Social Responsibility program often implements fishing ground programs by immersing fish FADs and coral gardens in the waters of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

The fish FAD and coral garden immersion program implemented by PT Timah Tbk is also in line with the implementation of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) carried out by the company by empowering community groups, in this case fishermen.

Fishing grounds are areas created or managed with the specific aim of increasing fisheries productivity.

PT Timah Tbk understands the importance of conserving marine resources and is committed to contributing positively to the environment and local communities in its operational areas.

After 2022, members of the MIND ID mining industry holding company will carry out a fishing ground program at seven points, such as in the waters of Rebo Beach and Jelitik waters in Bangka Regency, the waters of Tanjung Gunung, Central Bangka Regency, the waters of Tanjung Subdistrict, the waters of Belo Laut, the waters of Tempilang and The waters of Limau Bay in West Bangka.

In 2023, PT Timah Tbk will again carry out a fishing ground program with fishermen groups which will be carried out at two points, namely in Deniang Waters and Rebo Waters in Bangka Regency.

Through the fishing ground and coral garden program, it is hoped that fishermen will increase their fish catch area so that fishermen do not have to go too far to go to sea, with the hope of increasing fishermen's catches with the existence of new fish houses from sunken fish FADs.

Apart from that, PT Timah Tbk also provides insight for fishing groups to create fish FADs which is one of the marine conservation efforts that can be carried out together.

Quoted from PT Timah Tbk's news some time ago, one of the fishermen groups involved by PT Timah Tbk in making fish FADs was the Bahari Permai Lestari Cooperative in West Bangka.

Chairman of the Permai Lestari Bahari Cooperative in Bangka Bara, Syaiful Bahari, said that the fishing ground program from PT Timah Tbk not only provides employment opportunities for them but also increases their knowledge in making fish FADs.

"Usually we only make simple FADs using sand and coconut fronds. Thank God we were able to complete the mandate from PT Timah to make FADs that are more durable," he said.

In the future, he said, this FAD could be used by local fishermen, not just their own group, with the hope that more fish will remain so that fishermen's catches will also increase. (*)
