Timah Mengajar: Partnering with Teachers to Realize Quality Education in Mining Areas

PANGKALPINANG – To improve education quality, PT Timah continues to introduce innovative programs, one of which is Timah Mengajar. This program aims to enhance teachers’ competencies by adopting innovative teaching methods that address the challenges of modern education.

PT Timah organizes literacy training for teachers, including workshops on scientific writing, in collaboration with the Sekawan Literacy Community.

The training program supports the professional development of teachers, encouraging them to implement these skills in their respective schools. Teachers have successfully produced collaborative works that have been published as books and scientific articles featured in mass media.

In 2024, Timah Mengajar reached 110 teachers across five locations: Pangkalpinang City, South Bangka Regency, Belitung Regency, East Belitung Regency, and Karimun Regency.

Beyond teacher training, Timah Mengajar also hosted workshops on parent-child collaboration in educating children with special needs.

A total of 175 special education teachers and 269 parents of children with special needs participated in the program in 2024.

Timah Mengajar will continue in 2025, with plans to expand its activities to five locations and introduce more varied programs, such as the Gernas Tastaka (National Movement to Eliminate Mathematics Illiteracy) targeting elementary, junior high, and high school teachers, as well as the Pengincer (Driving Indonesia Smart) program.

PT Timah collaborates with various stakeholders, including government bodies, communities, and societal groups, in delivering Timah Mengajar.

Kurniati, Chairperson of the Sekawan Literacy Community, expressed her hope that PT Timah would continue to support their community and teachers in improving literacy across various regions.

She commended PT Timah's role and contribution to education, emphasizing that the involvement of this Mind ID subsidiary greatly advances literacy efforts.

"The extraordinary thing is that PT Timah Tbk fully sponsors the activities we carry out. Without partnerships in education, something feels lacking. The presence of PT Timah is truly remarkable in helping us advance education and promote literacy," said Kurniati.

Haris Setiawan, Assistant for People’s Welfare in South Bangka Regency, noted that the Timah Mengajar program enhances teachers’ competencies.

"This program not only trains teachers but also educates them on scientific writing, which is an important tool for improving professionalism and teaching quality," he stated during his speech at the Timah Mengajar event in South Bangka at the end of 2024.

One participant, Marini, an elementary school teacher from SDN 4 Kelapa Kampit, East Belitung, shared that the program was enjoyable and beneficial in developing teachers’ writing competencies.

"This program is vital for increasing literacy in the learning environment, so children can adopt a positive mindset and develop sustainable living habits," she said.

The Timah Mengajar program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting quality education.

Anggi Siahaan, Department Head of Corporate Communication at PT Timah, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering innovative programs that benefit the wider community.

"Timah Mengajar is a tangible manifestation of our commitment to creating a positive impact in education. PT Timah Tbk is dedicated to actively supporting education quality improvement through various programs as we aim for a Golden Indonesia by 2045," she concluded. (*)
