PANGKALPINANG -- As a manifestation of its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, PT TIMAH Tbk carried out its Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program through mangrove planting activities in coastal areas of the Riau Islands Province.
In 2025, PT TIMAH Tbk planted a total of 11,000 mangroves on Kundur Island, Karimun Regency, and Meranti Regency as an effort to protect coastal ecosystems, prevent abrasion, and support environmental sustainability around the company’s operational areas.
The planting of tens of thousands of mangroves was carried out in Tanjung Gemuk Village, Rangsang District, Meranti Regency, as well as in Sawang Laut Village in collaboration with the Tuah Bersatu Sawang Laut group.
The mangrove planting program implemented by PT TIMAH Tbk involved local governments, local authorities, and coastal communities who directly benefit from the presence of mangrove forests.
Through the TJSL program, the company not only focuses on economic aspects, but also strengthens environmental and social pillars as part of the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
Head of the Corporate Communication Department of PT TIMAH Tbk, Anggi Siahaan, said that mangroves play a strategic role in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems and controlling climate change.
“Mangroves function as natural coastal protectors against abrasion, habitats for marine life, and effective carbon absorbers. Through this TJSL program, the company wants to make a tangible contribution to maintaining environmental sustainability in Kundur,” Anggi said.
In addition to environmental protection, the mangrove planting program is also expected to provide long-term economic benefits for coastal communities, such as increased fishery yields and potential ecotourism development.
Head of Sawang Laut Village, Jefrizal, expressed his appreciation for PT TIMAH Tbk’s commitment and direct involvement in supporting coastal conservation in the Kobel Beach area.
“Thank you to PT TIMAH Tbk for carrying out mangrove planting at Kobel Beach. This is very beneficial for protecting the coastal environment so that coastal and marine ecosystems are preserved,” he said.
Jefrizal noted that the condition of mangroves in the Kobel Beach area had been quite damaged, so replanting is expected to help restore the coastal ecosystem.
“Previously, the mangroves along the Kobel Laut coastline were quite damaged. With this planting, more mangroves will grow, and in the future they will serve as a barrier against coastal abrasion,” he explained.
He added that the mangrove planting carried out by PT TIMAH Tbk not only improves coastal ecosystems but also helps boost the economic conditions of fishing communities.
“What we plant, if continuously maintained, will provide economic benefits, as it will become a habitat for fish and shrimp and eventually increase fishermen’s catches,” he said.
Going forward, he hopes PT TIMAH Tbk can continue to collaborate with local communities in implementing environmental conservation programs. (*)
