PANGKALPINANG -- As part of its commitment to improving the quality of education and literacy in the region, PT TIMAH Tbk donated books to SMP Negeri 2 Pangkalpinang over the past weekend.
The books provided by PT TIMAH Tbk cover the history of Bangka Belitung and Indonesia’s tin mining industry. The initiative aims to expand students’ access to engaging and useful reading materials while deepening their understanding of the region’s natural potential, particularly tin mining — one of Bangka Belitung’s and Indonesia’s leading mineral commodities.
The arrival of the tin mining books at the school’s Literacy Corner was warmly welcomed by the school community. The Principal of SMP Negeri 2 Pangkalpinang, Herlina, said that the books not only enrich the reading collection but also serve as an educational resource that is both relevant and contextual for students.
“With the inclusion of tin mining books in our school’s Literacy Corner, students can become more familiar with one of the main livelihoods of the Bangka Belitung community — tin mining. Through these books, students are expected to understand the historical, social, and economic values associated with tin,” said Herlina.
According to Herlina, the presence of these books aligns with the school’s literacy program through the Pojok Literasi or Pojok Nyatoh initiative, which emphasizes strengthening literacy based on local culture. The program aims to foster students’ interest in reading while instilling an appreciation for the region’s cultural wisdom.
“This program is designed to develop students’ reading habits while nurturing a love for Bangka Belitung’s cultural heritage. One of the activities we’ve implemented was a storytelling performance during the launch of Pojok Nyatoh on October 31, 2025,” she added.
In addition to broadening students’ knowledge, these books are also expected to serve as educational tools that help students understand the importance of environmental preservation and appreciation of natural resources. Through learning based on local potential, students can gain a comprehensive understanding of the interconnection between people, nature, and the regional economy.
“These tin mining books can serve as an effective educational medium to introduce Bangka Belitung’s leading natural resources to the younger generation. Through contextual learning, students can understand the importance of protecting the environment and valuing their region’s natural potential,” she concluded.
