PANGKALPINANG – Sustainable environmental management is a key commitment of PT Timah Tbk in carrying out its business operations. One of the company’s key environmental sustainability initiatives is its reclamation program.
PT Timah consistently conducts reclamation efforts to restore land functions after mining activities. As a member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID, the company implements an ecological and social-based approach to ensure that reclamation not only restores ecosystems but also provides benefits to surrounding communities.
Between 2020 and 2024, PT Timah has successfully reclaimed 1,565.30 hectares of former mining land across Bangka Regency, West Bangka, Central Bangka, South Bangka, Belitung, East Belitung, and inter-regency mining concession areas.
The company's reclamation program includes reclamation planning, site surveys, community socialization, land structuring, planting, maintenance, success assessments, and conservation-based environmental management to maintain ecosystem balance.
For land reclamation, PT Timah focuses on revegetation by planting fast-growing tree species such as acacia, sengon, casuarina, and ketapang. The company also plants productive and economically valuable crops like oil palm, rubber, and fruit-bearing trees, as well as local plant species such as cashew, pelawan, seruk/puspa, and gelam, which are interspersed among the fast-growing trees.
Additionally, PT Timah carries out alternative reclamation projects based on proposals and agreements with stakeholders. These projects include developing tourism sites, public cemeteries, and motocross circuits on reclaimed land.
Beyond tree planting, PT Timah also undertakes ecosystem rehabilitation efforts, such as restoring natural habitats for protected wildlife. A key initiative in this area is the rehabilitation program at Kampoeng Reklamasi Air Jangkang, conducted in collaboration with ALOBI.
The reclamation program is designed not only to restore the environment but also to create positive social and economic impacts for local communities. PT Timah actively involves local communities in reclamation efforts through environmentally based economic empowerment initiatives, such as agroforestry and ecotourism projects at Kampoeng Reklamasi Selinsing, in partnership with BUMDes Selinsing.
PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that to ensure the success of the reclamation program, the company undergoes direct evaluations by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
"The company carries out reclamation with an ecological-social approach because reclamation is not just about restoring post-mining land to its original state, but also about creating new value for the environment and society," Anggi explained.
Anggi added that PT Timah collaborates with various community groups in reclamation efforts and actively participates in government-led environmental management programs. (*)
