Supporting Tourism and Marine Ecosystems, PT Timah Tbk and AAI Sumbagsel Release Hawksbill Turtle Hatchlings on Kelayang Island

BELITUNG -- PT Timah reaffirmed its commitment to marine ecosystem conservation through a collaborative effort with PT Bukit Asam, the Coral Conservation Community of Keciput Tourism Village, Gerude Diving Club, and several companies under the South Sumatra Regional Association of Internal Auditors (AAI Sumbagsel).

As part of this environmental initiative, 50 hawksbill turtle hatchlings were released into the waters of Kelayang Island Beach, Belitung Regency, on Monday, (17/6/2025).

In addition to the hatchling release, a symbolic handover of coral reef seedlings was also carried out as part of efforts to preserve marine biodiversity.

The turtle release was part of a series of activities held in conjunction with the AAI Sumbagsel National Seminar, which took place the day before at the Tanjung Binga Ballroom, Swiss-Belhotel, Belitung Regency, under the theme "Good Governance: The Key to Organizational Success in a Changing Environment."

Chairman of AAI Sumbagsel, Nugraha Nurtyasanta, emphasized that the role of internal auditors goes beyond compliance and should also promote sustainability within organizations.

“This is a concrete form of our commitment. Internal audit is not only about compliance, but also about supporting environmental conservation efforts as part of corporate social responsibility,” Nugraha stated.

The initiative also aims to support local tourism by protecting marine habitats, particularly coral reefs, which serve as a home to various fish species.

Meanwhile, Ringgo, also known as Firmasyah, head of the Coral Conservation Community of Keciput Tourism Village, expressed appreciation for the involvement of the private sector in marine conservation efforts.

“Thankfully, the local community is becoming more educated and motivated to protect turtle habitats. Involvement from companies like these further strengthens the environmental conservation movement,” he said.

Ringgo also expressed gratitude to AAI Sumbagsel for its support and hopes that such initiatives will continue regularly.

“I hope this doesn’t stop here but continues in a sustainable manner. Let’s protect our oceans—because if not us, then who?" he added.

The activity involved a number of companies under AAI Sumbagsel, including PT Pupuk Sriwijaya, PT Bukit Multi Investama, PT Timah Investasi Mineral, PT Bumi Sawindo Permai, PT Internasional Prima Coal, PT Bukit Prima Bahari, PT Pelabuhan Bukit Prima, PT Bukit Pembangkit Innovative, PT Satria Bahana Sarana, PT Bukit Energi Servis Terpadu, PT Timah Karya Persada Properti, and Bank Sumsel Babel.
