Students from SMK IT Jamalullail Explore PT TIMAH’s Air Jangkang Reclamation Village to Learn About Post-Mining Land Management

BANGKA -- The transformation of former mining land into productive areas provided a hands-on learning experience for students from SMK IT Jamalullail Belinyu. As part of their annual industry visit, the students observed post-mining environmental management firsthand at PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk’s Air Jangkang Reclamation Village in Riding Panjang Village, Merawang District, Bangka Regency, on Wednesday (September 23, 2026).

The visit gave students an opportunity to see how the knowledge they have learned at school is applied in practice, while also gaining insight into PT TIMAH’s post-mining land management efforts through PT Timah Agro Manunggal (TAM).

During the visit, participants received an overview of post-mining land management and utilization, including mine pit water quality management, the application of biofloc technology, and the development of integrated aquaculture and agriculture within the reclamation area.

Ella Anggraini, a teacher accompanying the students from SMK IT Jamalullail Belinyu, said the industry visit is part of the school’s learning program designed to give students experience beyond the classroom and laboratory.

“Every year, we organize an industry visit so students can see the workplace firsthand. The material presented by the PT TAM team is also highly relevant to the students’ field of study. Through the presentation and direct observation at Air Jangkang, students can broaden their knowledge and gain a better understanding of the material,” Ella said.

According to her, the visit provided practical knowledge that could be further developed at school. One example is biofloc aquaculture technology, which she believes could be incorporated into student learning activities.

In addition to gaining technical knowledge, the students were able to see how former mining land is managed and developed into an area that serves ecological functions while also providing productive benefits to the community.

Ella said the management of the Air Jangkang reclamation area provides an interesting learning example for students by allowing them to directly observe how post-mining land can be repurposed.

“We believe what PT TIMAH and PT TAM have done in managing former mining land is very good, transforming it into a productive area with the potential to become an educational tourism destination,” she said.

A similar experience was shared by Al Hikmah Solawatul, a 12th-grade student majoring in Brackish and Marine Aquaculture Agribusiness (APPL). She said she was delighted to observe post-mining environmental management firsthand after previously learning about it primarily through theory.

“I am very happy because I gained new knowledge and insights. In my opinion, the water and environmental management here is very good, from pH stabilization to maintaining uniform growth among aquatic organisms,” she said.

She was also interested in the technologies introduced during the visit, including aquaponics and hydroponics, which she considered relevant for further development as part of school learning activities.

Through hands-on learning at the Air Jangkang Reclamation Village, the students not only gained knowledge about post-mining management but also saw how reclamation efforts can transform former mining areas into spaces with educational and productive value. (*)
