Strengthening the Company’s Safety Culture, PT TIMAH Tbk Holds Mining Safety Webinar

KARIMUN -- As part of the 2026 National Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Month commemoration, PT TIMAH Tbk, through its Kundur Division Area, held the 2026 Mining Safety Webinar on Wednesday (February 11, 2026).

The activity forms part of the company’s commitment to strengthening the implementation of a safety culture across all operational lines, particularly in tin mining and processing activities, which carry high levels of risk.

The Mining Safety Webinar was attended by the Sub-Coordinator for Mineral Mining Safety from the Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral, Dean Andreas Simorangkir; Head of Mining Engineering for the Kundur Area of PT TIMAH Tbk, Ronanta; as well as PT TIMAH Tbk employees.

The event also featured speakers including Junior Mining Inspector at the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal (Minerba), M. Irfan Sabran; First-Level Mining Inspector at the Directorate General of Minerba, M. Aditya Riani; and Junior Mining Inspector at the Directorate General of Minerba, Zulkifli Basri.

Dean Andreas Simorangkir, Sub-Coordinator for Mineral Mining Safety at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, stated that mining safety is managed by each individual and forms an interconnected ecosystem involving multiple sectors, including companies, the government, academics, and associations.

“This is our shared safety ecosystem that must demonstrate its credibility through professionalism, resilience, reliability, and collaboration. PT TIMAH Tbk has raised a very contextual theme. I am very pleased that we are discussing the safety of suction dredgers and bucket dredgers specifically, as this aligns with the operational risk characteristics of PT TIMAH Tbk,” he said.

According to him, offshore mining operations are influenced by weather, waves, currents, and varying visibility, resulting in a different risk profile.

“Vessel-based mining involves different mechanical systems, and the interaction between humans, machines, and the environment is also more dynamic. That’s just from the technical aspect. From the non-technical side, such as weather conditions, the challenges are also significant. Sometimes maintaining operational discipline can be difficult. We must remain vigilant and never underestimate even the smallest risks, even if they are part of routine activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Junior Mining Inspector Zulkifli Basri, who also served as a speaker, emphasized the importance of risk identification before starting work.

“Safety must be a priority from the very beginning. Make sure the work location is safe and understand the potential hazards. Many workplace accidents occur due to negligence and a lack of awareness of the surrounding environment,” he explained.

He encouraged all workers to cultivate awareness of their own safety, their colleagues’ safety, and work equipment by conducting observations and evaluations before starting work.

“Our hope is simple: go to work with enthusiasm, work safely, and return home healthy,” he said.

The webinar also outlined various regulations that serve as the foundation for managing mining safety, including Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 26 Article 14 concerning Mining Safety (K3 and Operational Safety), Ministerial Decree Number 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 on Guidelines for Good Mining Practices, and Director General Decree Number 185/K/37.04/DJB/2018 on Technical Guidelines for Mining Safety Implementation, including the application and reporting of the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP).

“Tin smelter operations, for example, involve high-temperature smelting processes, handling molten metal, and the use of hazardous chemicals, requiring strict risk control and high operational discipline,” he added.

Government oversight through Mining Inspectors was also highlighted as a key pillar in building a strong national mining safety ecosystem, not only in a repressive manner but also through preventive and educational approaches.

Through the series of National K3 Month activities, PT TIMAH Tbk reaffirmed its commitment to continuously strengthening its safety culture as an integral part of good corporate governance and responsible mining operations. (*)
