Sharing Lunar New Year Gifts: PT Timah’s Tradition of Supporting the Chinese Community

PANGKALPINANG – Sharing joy during religious holidays is a long-standing tradition at PT Timah. Various forms of assistance are provided to communities celebrating religious holidays, including Eid, Lunar New Year, Christmas, and others.

PT Timah's commitment to sharing happiness during these celebrations has been ongoing for years as a gesture of appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural diversity.

Recently, PT Timah once again extended its generosity to the Chinese community in the company’s operational areas in celebration of Lunar New Year.

As a member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, PT Timah continued its tradition of distributing Lunar New Year gifts, such as providing an outboard engine to Ko Ajam, a fisherman in West Bangka Regency.

Chairman of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Bambang Patijaya, commended PT Timah for its commitment as one of the tin mining companies in Bangka Belitung that consistently channels CSR assistance to all segments of society, including the Chinese community.

"I heard that PT Timah has been providing aid, and we highly appreciate it. Because these contributions are given to all stakeholders, regardless of ethnicity or religion. Places of worship, whether mosques, churches, temples, or monasteries, all receive support. I hope PT Timah continues its CSR initiatives so that even more people can benefit from its presence," he said.

In 2024, PT Timah collaborated with the Bangka United Social Foundation (YSBB) to distribute Lunar New Year gifts in the form of food packages to those celebrating in Bangka Regency.

Rice, the Field Coordinator of YSBB, stated that PT Timah’s Lunar New Year gifts were deeply meaningful to the recipients.

"These gifts from PT Timah mean a lot to us because this is the first time we have collaborated to distribute Lunar New Year packages. Previously, the support was usually in the form of financial assistance. PT Timah is truly remarkable," Rice said, as quoted in PT Timah Tbk’s report.

In 2023, PT Timah also distributed Lunar New Year gifts to communities in West Bangka Regency, specifically in Belo Laut Village, Muntok District.

The gifts included basic food supplies, beverages, snacks, and red envelopes (angpao), given to the elderly, orphans, and individuals with disabilities who celebrated the Lunar New Year.

One of the recipients, nine-year-old Julianti Suci Ramadini, expressed joy and surprise upon receiving a Lunar New Year gift from PT Timah.

"I'm very happy to receive PT Timah's gift; now I can buy new clothes. Thank you, PT Timah! I hope you continue to prosper," said Juli.

Similarly, 82-year-old Mang Liu Sien shared his gratitude for receiving a gift from PT Timah. He recalled previously receiving a decent housing donation from the company.

"I'm so happy to receive another gift from PT Timah. This time, it's a Lunar New Year package. A few years ago, they provided me with a livable home, which I still live in," he said.

Additionally, during the 2023 Lunar New Year celebrations, PT Timah provided walking canes to elderly residents, including 80-year-old Then A Siu from Dusun IV, Belo Laut Village, Muntok District, West Bangka Regency.

Then A Siu was one of three individuals who received walking canes as part of PT Timah Tbk’s Lunar New Year initiative.

During the 2022 Lunar New Year, PT Timah also gifted an outboard motor to Ko Awan, a resident of Dusun Air Antu, Deniang Village, Riau Silip District, Bangka Regency.

At the time, Ko Awan’s outboard motor, essential for his livelihood, had been broken for nearly a year, forcing him to rely on a less efficient small engine for fishing.

"This is like receiving an angpao, but even better because it’s a tool to help me earn a living, just before the Lunar New Year. I’m extremely grateful for this support," said Ko Awan.

Another recipient of PT Timah’s Lunar New Year gift was 85-year-old Mei Ly from Matras Village, Sungailiat District, Bangka Regency.

Ahead of the 2021 Lunar New Year, Mei Ly received a livable home from PT Timah after her previous house was on the verge of collapse.

"I'm overjoyed and never expected my house to be rebuilt by PT Timah. I had resigned myself to my living conditions. Thank you to the Matras government and PT Timah for helping me rebuild my home," she concluded. (*)
