EAST BELITUNG – Selinsing Reclamation Village in East Belitung Regency is a tangible example of sustainable environmental management undertaken by PT Timah Tbk.
At Selinsing Reclamation Village, PT Timah, together with BUMDes (Village-Owned Enterprise) Selinsing, has transformed former mining land into an agro-tourism area. In this zone, PT Timah has developed a green area with multiple functions.
Sustainable environmental management, preserving environmental sustainability, and enhancing environmental carrying capacity are commitments of PT Timah Tbk in conducting its business processes.
The reclaimed land in Selinsing Reclamation Village integrates various sectors, such as agriculture, livestock, educational tourism, nurseries, and water tourism through pond management.
Chairman of BUMDes Selinsing, Diky Afriansyah, stated that Selinsing Reclamation Village has also become an educational tourism destination for both locals and tourists.
In recent months, thousands of people have visited Selinsing Reclamation Village, drawn by the opportunity to observe how former mining land can be used across various sectors.
"What attracts people is the educational aspect of this tourism. Together with PT Timah, we have repurposed this critical, formerly mined land into areas such as tourism, agriculture, and livestock. We’ve even planted endemic Belitung trees here that are increasingly rare to find," he said.
In addition to tourists, students and researchers frequently visit Selinsing Reclamation Village to study and conduct research on topics like planting patterns on former mining land and observing various types of local plants.
According to Diky, another draw at Selinsing Reclamation Village is its complete facilities, including restrooms, a prayer room, traditional houses, a man-made lake, water rides, and beautiful scenery.
The environmental management program by PT Timah in Selinsing Reclamation Village, a unique form of reclamation, not only revitalizes former mining land but also empowers the local community’s economy.
Diky mentioned that BUMDes Selinsing has felt the positive impact of Selinsing Reclamation Village, as they are involved in its management and earn income from it.
“The economic impact is already noticeable, especially during the busier times. We also involve MSMEs from the local community to provide food for visitors,” he said.
He expressed appreciation for PT Timah’s collaboration with BUMDes Selinsing in managing this area. They also receive training and support to enhance the appeal of the tourism site.
"PT Timah has been very helpful in managing this area, and this is a form of community empowerment. We benefit from this program both economically and as part of an educational initiative for managing critical former mining land into productive areas," he concluded. (*)
