KARIMUN -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving coastal environments through a mangrove crab restocking program in the company’s operational areas.
Throughout 2025, PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk has released a total of 1,400 mangrove crab juveniles into the waters of Kundur and Karimun in the Riau Islands Province.
This program is part of the company’s marine reclamation and coastal ecosystem conservation efforts, while also supporting the economic sustainability of local fishing communities.
The crab restocking initiative also aims to maintain the balance of the mangrove ecosystem, which plays an important role in preventing coastal abrasion, maintaining environmental quality, and serving as a natural habitat for various marine species.
Department Head of Corporate Communication at PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk, Anggi Siahaan, said that mangrove crab restocking is carried out regularly to ensure the population remains sustainable.
“Restocking plays an important role in restoring aquatic species populations, increasing biodiversity, and maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystem functions. The company strives to sustain and grow the population so it can generate economic benefits for fishing communities,” Anggi said.
One fisherman, Awang, admitted that he has felt the positive impact of the program. He said that fishermen now catch not only fish, but also fairly large crabs.
“Crabs sell quickly because there’s strong demand. Thank you to PT TIMAH Tbk for continuing the crab releases, so now the population is quite abundant,” he said.
Similarly, Idris, a fisherman from Gemuruh Village, said the restocking program has been very helpful for traditional fishermen, as the crab population continues to increase.
“We’re very happy because we’ve already felt the benefits. The crab population has grown and our catches have improved,” he said.
Through the release of 1,400 mangrove crabs, PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk hopes to maintain the sustainability of coastal ecosystems in the Riau Islands while also improving the long-term welfare of coastal communities.
