PANGKALPINANG – PT Timah continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability through various environmental management and monitoring programs across all its operational areas.
As a company directly engaged with nature, PT Timah is committed to mitigating environmental risks and impacts by implementing environmental management and monitoring, as well as climate change mitigation activities.
These efforts include managing and monitoring water and air quality, conserving biodiversity, and ensuring responsible production by minimizing waste to achieve decarbonization.
Additionally, the company’s environmental management encompasses biodiversity conservation in mining areas, post-mining reclamation, and rehabilitation. The goal is to support eco-friendly operations and meet sustainability performance targets.
Key environmental efforts such as biodiversity conservation, water efficiency, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and decarbonization, along with responsible production, are aimed at lowering emissions and supporting the Net Zero Emission target. Through integrated environmental management, PT Timah is committed to realizing environmentally friendly operations.
As part of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, PT Timah integrates environmental conservation efforts and biodiversity protection in both its fauna and flora across its operational areas.
For reclamation, PT Timah carries out land and sea reclamation in the Bangka Belitung Islands and Riau Islands Provinces. Land reclamation involves revegetation and planting, while sea reclamation includes initiatives such as artificial reefs, squid restocking, fish shelters, coral transplantation, erosion barriers, mangrove planting, and crab restocking, along with monitoring seawater quality.
Extreme climate change poses significant challenges to smooth operations. To address this, PT Timah has optimized decarbonization activities, which include energy efficiency and reduction initiatives aimed at lowering emissions, alongside environmentally friendly mining practices and responsible production to reduce waste.
The company also works on climate change mitigation through research and development of environmentally friendly technologies that align with operational needs, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and monitoring emission levels and ambient air quality. PT Timah has implemented programs such as biodiesel energy optimization and the substitution of high-emission energy sources with low-emission alternatives.
Nature-based solutions are another priority, with initiatives such as biodiversity conservation (mangrove planting, squid and mangrove crab restocking, coral transplantation, artificial reefs/fish shelters), the use of eco-friendly machinery, solar power plant construction, post-mining land reclamation, and other environmental programs.
In addition to mitigating climate-related risks, PT Timah is also leveraging opportunities to support decarbonization efforts, such as reducing fossil energy consumption through energy efficiency improvements. The company is using environmentally friendly energy in its operations and reducing carbon to promote sustainable business practices.
PT Timah is also investing in eco-friendly, high-tech assets and developing renewable energy businesses, such as the implementation of a 3 MWp Solar Photovoltaic at the Mentok smelter, the use of Biodiesel up to B100, fossil fuel substitution with renewable energy sources, and the overhaul and modification of mining equipment. The company is also converting lifting and transport equipment from fossil fuel to electric energy.
PT Timah's environmental management efforts are not only focused on environmental responsibility but also support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The company’s efforts to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability are key to our long-term success. PT Timah continuously enhances its operational standards to be more eco-friendly and provide positive impacts on nature and communities,” said PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan.
