KUNDUR -- PT Timah Tbk consistently carries out mangrove planting in the company's operational areas. This mangrove planting is a concrete step by the company to protect coastal ecosystems and curb the climate crisis.
To support mangrove planting program activities in the Company's operational areas, PT Timah Tbk at the Kundur Production Unit also carries out mangrove nurseries at the Mangrove Nursery location.
PT Timah Tbk Mangrove Nursery in the Kundur Production Unit cultivates several types of available mangrove seeds such as perpat, api-api, and mangrove.
Currently, the number of mangrove seedlings in the Nursery is 10,376, consisting of 3,500 mangrove seedlings, 6,456 apical species, and 450 perpat.
Apart from carrying out its nurseries, PT Timah Tbk also continues to take seeds from community cultivation. This is a form of community empowerment and driving the community's economy.
Head of Corporate Communications at PT Timah Tbk, Anggi Siahaan, explained that this mangrove nursery is to support the mangrove planting activities carried out by the company.
PT Timah Tbk often carries out mangrove planting in coastal areas both in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and in the Riau Islands Province. Planting mangroves is an effort to help prevent abrasion, protect coastal ecosystems, and halt the climate crisis.
"If the mangrove ecosystem is maintained, it can provide many benefits for the environment and the surrounding community. If the mangrove is maintained, the surrounding ecosystem will also develop well, especially as mangroves are a habitat for fish, shrimp, and crabs, so this has an impact on fishing groups," he said.
PT Timah Tbk itself has planted tens of thousands of mangroves in coastal areas in mid-2016-2022. The number of mangroves that have been planted by members of the MIND Mining Industry reached 44,050 plants.
In carrying out mangrove planting, PT Timah Tbk also often collaborates with community groups such as fishermen, students, and youth groups.
