JAKARTA — PT Timah Tbk's commitment to implementing community empowerment programs in the mining area has been recognized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
PT Timah Tbk received the Performance of Development and Community Empowerment (PPM)/Mining for the Welfare of the Community (Tamasya) Award 2023 in the Monitoring and Evaluation of Programs Involving Multiple Parties category, Assessment Period 2022.
The award and trophy from the Ministry of ESDM were directly received by the Head of CSR Division of PT Timah Tbk, Rahmat Taufik, at Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta, on Friday night (December 8, 2023).
The PPM Award activity is part of the ESDM Ministry's agenda for the annual assessment of the implementation of Development and Community Empowerment Programs (PPM) by holders of IUP/IUPK for both minerals and coal throughout Indonesia.
Tamasya Award 2023 assessment includes several stages such as administration, interviews, and field verification of business entities. The evaluation aspects include administration, Feasibility Study, RIPPM, RKAB, reporting order, compliance with data and information submission, and implementation for the mining community.
The assessment is carried out by independent expert assessment teams from various universities (Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Sriwijaya, Universitas Padjajaran, Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Yogyakarta) and the Bandung Polytechnic of Social Welfare and Practitioners.
In his address, Minister of ESDM Arifin Tasrif stated that they encourage mineral and coal mining companies to optimize the implementation of PPM, in accordance with the Guidelines for Community Development and Empowerment, covering education, health, real income levels, economic independence, socio-cultural aspects, environment, community institutionalization, and infrastructure.
"We also encourage mineral and coal mining companies to optimize the implementation of PPM, considering the various challenges affecting the performance of the mineral and coal mining world," said Arifin.
He hopes that implemented PPM programs and the commitment of mining companies can continue and be strengthened to create positive changes in society.
"In addition, the fluctuation in mining commodity prices and diminishing reserves require post-mining readiness. It is urgent for us to collectively accelerate efforts in fostering independence and economic transformation for the communities around mining," he added.
"Hopefully, the Tamasya Award 2023 can continue to demonstrate a commitment to providing a sustained positive contribution to the people of Indonesia," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Acting Director General of Minerals and Coal, Bambang Suswantono, stated that to provide optimal mining contributions to society, PPM has been regulated in several derivative regulations from Law No. 3 of 2020, including Minister of ESDM Regulation No. 25 of 2018, Minister of ESDM Regulation No. 26 of 2018, and Minister of ESDM Decision No. 1824 K/30/MEM/2018 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of Community Development and Empowerment.
The planning and implementation of PPM require the involvement of all stakeholders, including Provincial Governments, District/City Governments, businesses, academics, and the community, encompassing programs in education, health, real income or employment, economic independence, as well as social and cultural aspects.
Additionally, PPM provides opportunities for local communities to participate in managing the community's living environment, forming community institutions to support PPM independence, and building infrastructure that supports PPM.
Bambang appreciates mining companies that receive awards and hopes that high-performing companies can serve as role models for the mining industry.
"High-performing mining companies can provide a positive picture of mining activities for the community through PPM programs, become role models for the mineral and coal mining industry in Indonesia, and enhance the spirit for the continued implementation of PPM to consistently provide benefits and sustainability for the communities around mining," he said.
Abdullah Umar, Corporate Secretary of PT Timah Tbk, mentioned that PT Timah Tbk consistently implements PPM programs as an effort to empower communities around mining areas.
"PT Timah Tbk is part of the community, growing and developing together with the community in the operational areas of the company. Therefore, PT Timah Tbk consistently empowers the community according to the potential possessed by the community," he said.
Some of the PPM programs implemented by PT Timah Tbk include coral gardens, the development of the indigenous Mapur community, the creative economy, and others.
