PT TIMAH Tbk Hosts Gong Opening Ceremony for 2024 Internal SMKP Audit of Mining Services Companies

PANGKALPINANG – PT TIMAH Tbk continues to strengthen the implementation of the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP) across its organization and business partners.

Through its Northern Bangka Area Division, PT TIMAH organized the Gong Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Internal SMKP Audit of Mining Services Companies at Graha Timah on Friday, November 22, 2024.

The event was attended by the Northern Bangka Area Head of Mining Operations, representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Mining Safety Sub-Directorate (SDKP), the Director of Operations & Production of PT TIMAH Tbk, the Division Head for Northern Bangka Area, the HSSE Division Head and team, representatives from the Processing Division, SMKP auditors of PT TIMAH Tbk, mining service license holders (IUJP) partnering with PT TIMAH, and participants of the SMKP implementation and auditor certification program.

The Gong Opening for the 2024 Internal SMKP Audit is part of a series of guidance activities for IUJP holders that PT TIMAH had conducted earlier this year.

Internal SMKP audits are mandatory for all mining license (IUP) and mining services license (IUJP) holders. These audits must be carried out at least once a year, with the audit results submitted to the government via the Chief Mine Inspector or the Director of Technical and Environmental Mining Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

PT TIMAH remains committed to implementing and enhancing workplace safety throughout its business processes. Employee safety is a top priority, reflected in the company’s “Stop Work Authority” policy, which empowers personnel to halt activities if they pose risks to safety, equipment, or the environment.

“At PT TIMAH, we believe safety is a top priority, and this policy reflects our commitment to minimizing workplace accidents and ensuring that every operational phase meets high safety standards,” said Nur Adi Kuncoro, Director of Operations of PT TIMAH.

Nur Adi hoped that partner companies could independently conduct SMKP audits by next year.

“We aim for these SMKP audits not merely to fulfill administrative obligations but also to serve as a tool for enhancing overall mining safety and operational quality. We also hope that all PT TIMAH partner companies will fulfill the government’s mandate and execute these audits effectively,” he added.

He also highlighted the importance of learning from workplace incidents, especially fatal accidents at PT TIMAH.

“Fatal workplace incidents within our company have provided valuable lessons. Worker safety is our top priority, and we are committed to improving safety systems and reducing the potential for future workplace accidents,” he said.

Dean Andreas Simorangkir, representing the Mining Safety Sub-Directorate of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, attended the event virtually and commended PT TIMAH's efforts.

“SMKP audits are not merely compliance activities; they are concrete steps to ensure that good mining practices are seriously implemented. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is fully prepared to support all companies in the mining sector in applying proper safety principles,” said Dean.

Dean also praised PT TIMAH for its tangible commitment to enhancing the capacity of internal SMKP auditors in Indonesia by developing the competencies of IUJP internal auditors in 2024.

“We hope more IUJP holders working with PT TIMAH Tbk will improve their competencies and independently implement the mining safety management system,” he added.

35 participants were awarded certificates of SMKP implementation, and five participants who passed the first phase of the SMKP auditor certification exam received official registration numbers from the Chief Mine Inspector.

To mark the commencement of the 2024 internal SMKP audit for IUJP holders, the event concluded with a closing statement, a countdown, and the sounding of a siren by Benny Pahala Hutahahean, Northern Bangka Area Division Head, accompanied by the Director of Operations & Production, Nur Adi Kuncoro.

The siren symbolizes PT TIMAH’s commitment to continually improving workplace safety and sustainability in its mining operations.

With the start of these internal SMKP audits, PT TIMAH aims to ensure that all mining sector operations are conducted safely, sustainably, and in compliance with safety standards. This initiative is a concrete step to prevent workplace accidents, enhance productivity, and create a safer work environment for all employees in the mining industry. (*)
