KUNDUR -- PT Timah Tbk, through its Kundur Production Unit, has undertaken crab restocking as an effort to preserve crab populations and stimulate the local economy.
The crab restocking initiative by PT Timah involves collaboration with local fishermen groups within the company's operational area. This ensures that the released crab population can thrive, benefiting both the ecosystem and the local community.
Apart from preserving crab populations in their natural habitat, PT Timah's crab restocking is a demonstration of the company's environmental responsibility. In 2023, as a member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID, PT Timah Tbk conducted crab restocking with over a thousand crabs released in areas around Pongkar Beach.
The local fishermen community has experienced the positive effects of PT Timah's crab restocking initiative. H. Idrus, the Chairman of the Gemuruh Village Fishermen, mentioned that crab populations in their natural habitat have become scarce and challenging to find.
"As fishermen, we are well aware that crab populations in the sea are now very limited and hard to come by. Hopefully, PT Timah's crab restocking efforts can help restore crab populations in their natural habitat, thereby contributing to the economic well-being of the local fishing community," he said.
Similarly, Amran, a fisherman from Sawang Laut Village, expressed his happiness about PT Timah's crab restocking activity, emphasizing the direct benefits for the fishing community and the environment.
"I strongly support this activity because, in the end, we fishermen will also feel the results. With an abundance of crabs, our income will undoubtedly increase," he said.
Yusufian, the West Kundur Sub-district Head, praised PT Timah for consistently and sustainably implementing environmental management programs with a focus on improving the local economy.
"PT Timah Tbk frequently engages in environmental management activities, including mangrove planting, erosion control, and now crab restocking. With over a thousand crab seeds released by the company, if they can breed successfully, it will undoubtedly help the local fishermen economically," he stated.
He mentioned that mangrove crabs have economic value and are in high demand. Considering the current popularity of seafood, there is a possibility of new seafood cafes or restaurants emerging along the West Kundur coast.
"Hopefully, what PT Timah is doing can help preserve nature and the environment and provide a positive impact on the community. Thus, the community can tangibly feel the company's contribution to their well-being," he concluded. (*)
