PT Timah Tbk and Gadjah Mada University Establish Cooperation in Education, Research, and Community Service

The MoU was signed by PT Timah Tbk Human Resources Director Hendra Kusuma Wardana and Vice Rector for Education and Teaching of Universitas Gadjah Mada Prof. Dr. Wening Udasmoro, S.S., M.Hum., DEA at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Friday (21/2/2025).

The scope of this memorandum of understanding includes; organizing education, research, community service, and training related to the tin mining sector and other mineral-based industries.

Second, the organization of collaborative research, technological innovation and engineering, and the development of strategic resources to support management in the field of tin mining and sustainable mineral-based industries.

Third, organizing scientific activities, scientific studies, seminars and workshops and improving and developing human resource competencies.

PT Timah Human Resources Director Hendra Kusuma said that this memorandum of understanding is a strategic collaboration between the world of education and the industrial world. This collaboration is expected to bring great benefits not only to both parties, but also to the wider community.

“Currently, we are at a very important point where the industrial world and the academic world must work together to create a sustainable innovation ecosystem. Higher education has a fundamental role in producing superior human resources who are ready to compete in the global world,” Hendra said.

PT Timah Tbk as an industrial sector provides more open space in the application of science in a practical context.

“Synergy like this will in turn accelerate the achievement of innovations that have a positive impact on society,” he said.

In the cooperation, there are several areas that will be focused on, namely; Education, through internship programs, scholarships, curriculum development based on industrial needs, and lectures.

Second, Research, which involves joint research to produce technological innovations, practical solutions to industrial challenges, and scientific publications that can enrich the repertoire of knowledge.

Third, Community Service, which includes joint Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, community empowerment, and science-based entrepreneurship development.

“Through this collaboration, we hope to create significant benefits for the wider community. We also hope that the company can continue to support applicable academic initiatives, which not only provide solutions for the industry, but also have a positive impact on nation building,” he said.

Meanwhile, UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, Prof. Wening Udasmoro, welcomed the cooperation between the two parties in human resource development.

According to Wening, UGM always strives to ensure that the knowledge developed has benefits and sustainability for society, both in protecting nature and humans.

UGM even continues to expand the relevance of education to various aspects of life, including economy, culture, law, social, and poverty alleviation.

“In the new curriculum, UGM will launch five transdisciplinary study programs, namely Maritime Affairs, Visual Communication Design, Sustainability, Metallurgy, and Criminology which include new postgraduate programs,” she said.

In the field of community service, said Wening, UGM students have routinely run community service programs in various regions, including in Bangka Belitung, covering food security, energy, culture, and language. Some of the work programs are implemented in order to support integrated agricultural programs and the use of technological innovation.

“We plant Gamagora rice to support food sovereignty, utilize biogas from cow dung for energy. We hope this program will be implemented in Bangka Belitung through this collaboration,” he hoped. (*)
