PT Timah Reclaims 299.47 Hectares of Former Mining Land in Bangka Belitung in 2023

PANGKALPINANG - Sustainable environmental management is one of PT Timah Tbk's commitments in carrying out its business processes.

One of the environmental management efforts carried out by PT Timah is consistent reclamation, both on land and at sea. In 2023, this member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID conducted land reclamation covering 299.47 hectares of former mining areas within the company's operational region.

Cumulatively, the land reclamation realization by PT Timah from 2015 to 2023 has reached 3,183.01 hectares, carried out in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The land reclamation conducted by PT Timah Tbk follows the company's reclamation plan, involving revegetation or planting and other forms of reclamation.

In implementing revegetation, PT Timah Tbk conducts planting and greening on post-mining land. The selected plant species for planting include fruit trees like oranges and avocados. Additionally, the company plants sengon trees, cashews, and oil palm.

As for other forms of reclamation, PT Timah will arrange former mining land according to the needs of the community.

Head of Corporate Communications at PT Timah, Anggi Siahaan, stated that PT Timah Tbk's commitment to carrying out reclamation is a form of implementing good mining practices by the company.

Anggi mentioned that PT Timah faces several challenges in achieving its reclamation targets. One of them is unauthorized tin mining in the locations earmarked for reclamation.

"In 2023, PT Timah's reclamation realization is not in line with the target, mainly due to several challenges such as land conflicts in the intended reclamation areas and unauthorized mining disturbances," said Anggi.

He continued, stating that in implementing reclamation, PT Timah Tbk also involves the local community to empower them, with the hope of providing economic benefits to the people.

"In carrying out reclamation, PT Timah also empowers the community. This way, the community is directly involved in jointly maintaining the reclaimed land," said Anggi.

By consistently carrying out reclamation, PT Timah takes concrete steps to restore biodiversity and improve land conditions to make it more productive. (*)"
