PT Timah Planted Hundreds of Thousands of Mangroves to Support Net Zero Emission Target

PANGKALPINANG -- As a form of commitment to environmental sustainability and climate change control, PT Timah continues to strengthen its active role in supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) program through mangrove planting programs.

One of the concrete steps taken by PT Timah is through the Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSR) program by carrying out mangrove planting activities in the company's operational areas.

Mangroves are known as one of the ecosystems that have a strategic role in absorbing carbon. Mangrove forests can store four to five times more carbon than tropical forests on land. Therefore, mangrove conservation and planting is an effective solution in supporting the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

PT Timah has continued to promote mangrove planting since ten years ago, which began in 2014 and continues to be carried out consistently to this day. Hundreds of thousands of mangrove trees have been planted in Bangka Belitung Islands Province and Riau Islands Province.

Between 2014-2024, MIND ID Mining Industry Holding Members have planted a total of 121,624 mangrove seedling trees in coastal areas. In 2024, the TINS Issuer planted 46,524 mangrove trees.

PT Timah collaborates with various parties in carrying out mangrove planting, such as the Regional Government, community groups, youth, students and fishermen.

The impact of mangrove planting carried out by PT Timah has begun to be felt by the community, as conveyed by the Head of Pokdakan Tuah Bersatu Amran some time ago.

Amran said that this is the second time PT Timah Tbk and they have planted mangroves in the Sawang Laut Beach area, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands Province. According to him, mangrove planting is very important to maintain coastal ecosystems, especially during certain seasons that can cause abrasion.

"In 2023, PT Timah had also planted mangroves in the area around here and it was quite successful. This year PT Timah is planting another 3000 mangroves. During the western season, the water is high, and these mangroves can protect the coastal ecosystem," Amran said.

According to him, in addition to preventing abrasion, the mangroves can have an economic impact on fishermen. The mangroves will provide habitat for fish and crabs.

"We also invite students in this activity, as a form of education to love the environment. Hopefully later the mangroves that have been planted can thrive so that they can provide many benefits," he said.

Meanwhile, PT Timah Corporate Communication Department Head Anggi Siahaan said that PT Timah prioritizes sustainability in its business processes.

This mangrove planting initiative is in line with the company's commitment to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially point 13 (Handling Climate Change) and point 14 (Marine Ecosystems).

“Mangrove planting is one of the company's real contributions in supporting climate change mitigation efforts,” said Anggi.

In addition to providing benefits in absorbing carbon emissions, mangrove forests also function to protect the coastline from abrasion, become a habitat for marine biota, and support the resilience of sustainable coastal ecosystems. (*)
