PT TIMAH Partners with Indonesian Bonsai Enthusiasts Association in Pangkalpinang to Beautify Bukit Baru Park and Promote Awareness of Native Bonsai Species

PANGKALPINANG -- Efforts to enhance green spaces while introducing the art of bonsai to the public are being carried out through a collaboration between the Pangkalpinang Chapter of the Indonesian Bonsai Enthusiasts Association (PPBI) and PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk.

As part of its commitment to environmental preservation, PPBI Pangkalpinang donated 10 potted bonsai trees to enhance the landscape of PT TIMAH’s Bukit Baru Park, a popular public space frequently visited by local residents.

The 10 bonsai trees were officially presented by PPBI Pangkalpinang Chairman Mashur Samsuri, commonly known as Dimas, to PT TIMAH President Director Restu Widiyantoro, accompanied by PT TIMAH General Affairs Division Head Wijaya, on Monday (November 2, 2026).

The donated bonsai trees represent various species, including sapu-sapu or tidur atap, myrtle, elm, tamarind, sancang, and coconut. Several of these species also reflect the rich diversity of local flora found on Bangka Island.

PT TIMAH’s Bukit Baru Park is a popular green space that offers a variety of public facilities, including sports amenities, jogging tracks, recreational areas, water attractions, and areas featuring various animal species.

PPBI Pangkalpinang Chairman Mashur Samsuri explained that the bonsai donation was an initiative by bonsai enthusiasts who wanted to contribute to environmental preservation and beautification.

According to him, PT TIMAH’s Bukit Baru Park has its own appeal as a popular destination for local residents. This inspired PPBI members to help enhance the park’s appearance by contributing bonsai trees from their collections.

“We noticed that PT TIMAH’s park attracts quite a lot of visitors. Driven by our concern for the environment, we, as bonsai enthusiasts, wanted to help make the park more beautiful and visually appealing,” Dimas said.

He explained that the donated bonsai trees are not merely ornamental plants but artistic creations that have undergone an extensive shaping and cultivation process.

In the world of bonsai, there are two categories: garden bonsai and competition bonsai. The trees donated to PT TIMAH belong to the competition bonsai category, which is recognized for its artistic value and is commonly featured in various competitions.

According to Dimas, cultivating bonsai requires dedication, patience, and considerable time. Each tree has unique characteristics that must be understood to ensure healthy growth and achieve an aesthetically pleasing form.

For this reason, PPBI Pangkalpinang has also expressed its willingness to assist PT TIMAH in maintaining the donated bonsai trees to preserve their beauty and quality.

“Through PPBI, we are ready to help PT TIMAH care for the bonsai trees in this park. We do not simply want to donate the plants; we also want to ensure they remain well-maintained,” he explained.

Beyond beautifying the park, Dimas hopes the bonsai collection will serve as an educational resource for the public, particularly younger generations, to learn about the art of bonsai and the potential of local plant species.

He also hopes to encourage more people in Bangka Belitung to explore and develop an interest in bonsai cultivation. According to him, Indonesia is home to a rich diversity of plant species with significant potential to be developed into bonsai of high artistic value.

Through this collaboration, PPBI Pangkalpinang hopes visitors will not only appreciate the beauty of bonsai but also gain a deeper understanding of the cultivation process, creativity, and environmental conservation values behind the art form.

This initiative by PPBI Pangkalpinang aligns with PT TIMAH’s ongoing efforts to provide green, welcoming, and comfortable public spaces. The presence of green spaces featuring various ornamental plants is expected to enhance visitors’ experiences while encouraging greater environmental awareness.

This collaboration also demonstrates that environmental responsibility can take many forms, including contributions from communities with a shared passion and expertise in ornamental plants. (*)
