PT Timah Distributes Food Aid to Flood-Affected Residents in Lumut Village

BANGKA – PT Timah has distributed food aid packages to residents affected by flooding in Lumut Village, Belinyu District, Bangka Regency.

The aid was symbolically handed over by Suhendi, the Lumut Mine Supervisor, accompanied by Anjar, AVP Secretariat of the North Bangka Area, at Mantung Pier, North Bangka Regency, to Frenky Rickyanto Liong, the Head of Lumut Village, during the National K3 Movement (Gernas K3) event in North Bangka on Wednesday (February 5, 2025).

Heavy rainfall last week caused the river to overflow early on Saturday (February 1, 2025), submerging parts of the village under more than one meter of water and disrupting daily activities.

Lumut Village Head, Frenky Rickyanto Liong, thanked PT Timah for their swift response and concern for the affected residents.

“We are very grateful to PT Timah for their quick action and care towards our residents affected by the flood,” he said.

Franky hopes that the food aid will help ease the burden on those impacted by the flooding.

“The heavy rainfall caused the river to rise by 50 centimeters to 1 meter, bringing daily activities to a standstill. We hope this aid will provide some relief to our residents who have been directly affected by the flood,” he added.

Beyond food aid, the village government has also requested PT Timah’s assistance in repairing a collapsed embankment to help prevent future flooding.

“We have submitted a request to PT Timah for assistance in repairing the damaged embankment. We hope for their support in mitigating future floods,” said Frenky.

The Chairman of RT 1 KD Belinyu, Subagyo, also expressed his appreciation to PT Timah for providing food aid. He described the extent of the damage, emphasizing that many households suffered significant losses.

“The broken river embankment, combined with heavy rainfall, caused severe flooding. Many household appliances were damaged—sofas and mattresses were soaked, and refrigerators stopped working due to water exposure,” he explained.

Similarly, Ulfa, the Head of Parit Kelapa Hamlet, recounted how the floodwaters rose rapidly, causing residents to panic and seek higher ground.

“The water entered so quickly that residents panicked and rushed to find higher ground,” she said.

Ulfa hopes that PT Timah will grant their request to repair the irrigation embankment, preventing future floods from reaching residential areas.

“We hope our request can be fulfilled soon so residents can resume their daily activities. We pray for PT Timah’s continued success and that they can keep supporting communities in need,” she concluded. (*)
