WEST BANGKA -- PT TIMAH Tbk continues to promote environmental awareness among younger generations. Through its Processing and Refinery Division, PT TIMAH conducted a plastic waste management training program for students, teachers, and staff of SD Negeri 22 Mentok in West Bangka Regency on Wednesday (June 17, 2026).
Held in collaboration with the Environmental Agency of West Bangka Regency, the program aimed to educate participants on environmental stewardship by fostering waste management habits from an early age while helping reduce pollution caused by plastic waste.
The training not only provided an understanding of the importance of sorting and managing waste but also taught participants how to transform plastic waste into useful products with added value, such as ecobricks.
PT TIMAH’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, said that the activity is an expansion of the company’s waste management initiatives that have been implemented in previous years.
"In 2025, the Company carried out various waste management initiatives, including the establishment of waste banks, ecobrick projects, and the implementation of double-sided paper usage. This year, the Company is expanding those efforts by providing education and training for students and teachers so that proper waste management practices can be adopted more broadly,” he said.
He explained that schools play a strategic role in shaping a culture of environmental responsibility. Therefore, students need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage waste wisely.
“We hope that after participating in this training, the school will be able to process its plastic waste into ecobricks, ensuring that the waste is not simply discarded but can be reused in a meaningful way,” he added.
In addition to supporting efforts to reduce plastic waste, the program also forms part of the company’s environmental management initiatives. Waste management is one of the assessment criteria in Indonesia’s Corporate Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management (PROPER).
Meanwhile, the Principal of SD Negeri 22 Mentok, Mulyo Suwarwoto, expressed appreciation for PT TIMAH’s initiative in providing plastic waste management education to the school community.
According to him, the activity aligns with the Adiwiyata Program, which aims to develop environmentally conscious and environmentally friendly schools.
“This activity is in line with the Adiwiyata Program, which integrates environmental conservation principles into the learning process. Education on utilizing waste materials, both organic and non-organic, is essential for fostering environmental awareness among students,” he said. (*)
