Protecting the Mangrove Crab Ecosystem, PT Timah Again Releases 400 Crab Seeds in Kundur Waters

KUNDUR -- PT Timah Tbk continues to be committed to protecting coastal ecosystems in the company's operational areas. Efforts to preserve coastal areas include planting mangroves and releasing crab seeds.

Mangrove crab is a fishery commodity that has the potential to support community life, especially for small-scale fishermen. The mangrove ecosystem has an important role as the main habitat for mangrove crabs.

For this reason, PT Timah again released 400 mangrove crab seeds on Kundur Island, on Friday (3/5/2024). PT Timah involves local communities in releasing mangrove crabs.

The distribution of crab seeds is the company's effort to maintain the mangrove crab ecosystem in nature so that it remains well maintained. Maintaining the crab ecosystem will have a positive impact on fishermen in improving the economy.

Amran, one of the fishermen who took part in this activity, said that his party was very happy with the release of hundreds of mangrove crab seeds. Moreover, mud crabs have high economic value.

According to him, currently, it is very difficult to find mangrove crabs in traditional markets because the population in their natural habitat in the sea is rare and almost non-existent.

"Currently, people consume crabs if they are not cultivated and grown from other areas, but they don't exist in the sea," he explained.

Meanwhile, Kundur Murhalim Village appreciated the activities carried out by PT Timah to protect the environmental ecosystem.

"PT Timah continues to work together with the community to carry out nature conservation activities. With the release of 400 mangrove crab seeds, if they can develop well, it will certainly provide additional economic support for the fishing community," he said.

He hopes that the community can also work together to look after the crabs that have been released so that they can develop well.

"Hopefully in the future, these crabs will be able to develop well and the mangrove forests around us will also be maintained. This will have a positive impact on the wider community, not just fishermen," he said. (*)
