Protecting the Environment and Boosting the Local Economy, PT Timah Trains Sungailiat Women to Turn Waste into Profitable Compost

BANGKA -- PT Timah Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting community-based environmental management. Through the Engineering & Operation Excellence Division, PT Timah collaborated with the Sungailiat Sub-district to provide compost-making training for women in the Semenggah area, Parit Pekir, Sungailiat, Bangka Regency.

The training took place on Thursday (July 24, 2025) at the TPS 3R KPP Sehati building and featured speakers from P Project Bangka Belitung. Most of the participants were housewives, who showed great enthusiasm during the hands-on sessions on how to process organic waste into compost.

This activity aimed to raise awareness and improve community skills in managing household waste, especially organic waste that is often overlooked.

"This initiative is an effort to encourage women to actively reduce household waste. The training is also part of PT Timah’s collaboration with the Sungailiat Sub-district," said Muhammad Rozi, Head of the Parit Pekir neighborhood.

Rozi expressed his appreciation for PT Timah’s attention to the surrounding community. He believes the training is highly beneficial as it transforms previously useless waste into economically valuable products.

"We are very grateful to PT Timah. Hopefully, this group continues to grow and the compost products become an additional source of income for the residents. This training is very valuable for KPP Sehati. Waste that was once useless can now be processed into something useful and profitable," he said.

One of the participants, Helda Affriyanti, who also serves as Deputy Chairperson of KPP Sehati, shared that she felt inspired after attending the training.

"Alhamdulillah, we’re feeling more motivated. Once our compost is ready, God willing, we plan to market it. Thank you to PT Timah for organizing this activity; it’s really beneficial," she said.

She also encouraged the community to start separating their waste at home, such as plastic bottles, vegetable scraps, rice, and fruit peels, which can be saved and deposited at the KPP Sehati waste bank every Saturday.

"We sort plastic bottles, clean and wash them thoroughly. We also separate household waste like vegetable scraps, rice, and fruit peels. Residents come to deposit their waste at the KPP Sehati waste bank every Saturday, and the money is collected throughout the year and withdrawn annually," explained the Deputy Chairperson of KPP Sehati.

Echoing Helda’s sentiments, another participant, Suryana, shared that the training broadened her understanding of waste management and environmental care.

"We now better understand how to make compost, especially how to reduce the odor. Hopefully, we can stay united in keeping the environment clean," she said.

Through this program, PT Timah hopes to foster a culture of responsible waste management and encourage economic self-sufficiency in the community through waste-derived products like compost.

This initiative aligns with the company's commitment to supporting sustainable environmental management and community empowerment programs.
