Promoting a Green Future, PT Timah's Initiative to Reduce Energy Consumption to Achieve Net Zero Emission

PANGKALPINANG -- PT Timah is implementing a number of initiatives to strengthen energy management efforts in the company's business processes. This step is one of the company's strategies in supporting the energy transition and reducing carbon emissions.

PT Timah is accelerating energy transition measures across its operational lines. This commitment is in line with the global vision to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the use of renewable energy sources.

The green steps taken by PT Timah in carrying out energy transition start from exploration, mining, processing, to smelting and also the company's office area.

Initiatives such as; Selective Mining, Energy Efficiency, Substitution of Fossil Fuels to Renewable Energy, PLNization at Mentok Site, Solar Photo Voltaic, and replacement of TL lamps to LED.

PT Timah Corporate Commnunication Department Head, Anggi Siahaan, said that the company's energy consumption reduction initiatives have had a positive impact on reducing energy consumption.

“Based on the evaluation results of the initiatives carried out, it shows a decrease in energy consumption. In 2024, the company managed to reduce energy consumption from all business sectors by 418,645.6 GJ or 22.69% compared to energy consumption in 2023,” Anggi said.

Anggi explained that the company applies selective mining, namely using more efficient energy equipment and optimizing the use of machines when operating.

In terms of energy transition, the company is reconditioning engines by conducting Over Houl Main Engines on Production Equipment in the exploration, mining, and processing and smelting sectors.

The company also substitutes fossil fuels to renewable energy by gradually procuring Hybrid Operational Vehicles, implementing B35 biodiesel and starting to switch to B40 biodiesel since February 2025, and procuring electric-based forklifts.

Another initiative taken by PT Timah to reduce energy consumption is the PLNization of PLTD Power Switching to PLN in the Mentok Site Processing and Smelting sector.

In addition, the company also conducted Solar Photo Voltaic by installing solar panels on the grid in the Bangka Island Air Jangkang Reclamation Area and Belitung Island Selinsing Water Reclamation Area, each of which amounted to 10 kWP.

Not only that, PT Timah also replaced TL lamps with LEDs, replacing lamps that have large power with smaller power with the same level of lighting.

“PT Timah's initiative to reduce energy consumption not only impacts operational efficiency, but also changes mindsets and ways of working. This is the Company's collective journey to ensure business and environmental sustainability,” he said.

PT Timah's energy management initiatives are not only part of efforts to support the national Net Zero Emission target, but also a real contribution in facing the challenges of climate change and a form of corporate responsibility for the future of the environment and future generations. (*)
