PONGKAR – To mitigate the impact of coastal erosion at Pongkar Beach, located in Pongkar Village, Tebing District, Karimun Regency, PT Timah plans to install a 100-meter-long erosion barrier in the area.
The plan has been positively received by local residents, as the erosion barrier is expected to help reduce and prevent further coastal erosion from reaching residential areas.
This was conveyed by the Head of RW 03 Pongkar Village, Iwan, during a socialization event on the installation project at the Pongkar Village Multipurpose Hall on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. According to Iwan, the barrier installation will significantly reduce erosion impacts.
"We greatly appreciate the plan to install the erosion barrier, as it will help lessen the critical erosion issues at Pongkar Beach," he stated.
He also mentioned that in 2022, PT Timah had previously installed erosion barriers at Pongkar Beach, and the benefits were already evident to the community.
"We, the residents, are very grateful for this initiative. The previous installation has proven effective in reducing erosion, and its benefits have been felt by the people living near the beach. Without that initial installation, the erosion at Pongkar Beach would have worsened," he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of Pongkar Village, Abdul Jamal, expressed his appreciation for PT Timah’s continued commitment to environmental management, particularly in preventing coastal erosion.
"The local community and the Pongkar Village authorities fully support this initiative, as the erosion at Pongkar Beach is visibly severe. PT Timah’s erosion barrier installation program will certainly help mitigate the ongoing damage," he said.
He emphasized that if left unaddressed, coastal erosion in the area would worsen and directly impact the local community.
"If erosion continues unchecked, it will eventually harm the residents. That is why I encourage the people of Pongkar Village to support this ongoing initiative by PT Timah," he concluded. (*)
