KARIMUN — PT Timah Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental management, not only through reforestation and land reclamation efforts but also by installing coastal erosion barriers to reduce shoreline degradation.
PT Timah has installed a 100-meter-long erosion barrier at Pongkar Beach, located in Pongkar Village, Tebing District, Karimun Regency. This initiative aims to prevent and mitigate the ongoing coastal erosion in the area.
The installation has been warmly welcomed by residents, who noted the increasing severity of coastal erosion in recent years and the urgent need for protective measures.
Pongkar Village Head, Abdul Jamal, stated that the erosion barrier is vital for reducing the impact of erosion at Pongkar Beach, making it safer and preserving its potential as a tourist destination.
"Thank you to PT Timah for showing concern for the community and the environment. The installation of this erosion barrier is something the community needed to help minimize erosion at Pongkar Beach, so it can once again become a beautiful tourist destination," he said.
He explained that Pongkar Beach used to be one of the iconic coastal tourism spots in Karimun Regency, popular among both locals and international visitors.
"However, over time, the erosion has become more severe, and the beach has become neglected, leading to fewer visitors. Hopefully, this erosion barrier will help prevent further damage," he added.
Meanwhile, Tebing Subdistrict Head, Khaidir, also expressed appreciation for PT Timah’s efforts in installing the barrier, given the critical condition of the coastline.
"The erosion at this beach had become very concerning and even critical, so the installation of this barrier will help reduce its impact and prevent it from reaching nearby residential areas," he said. (*)
