Preserving Coastal Ecosystems and Boosting the Local Economy, PT Timah Restocks Hundreds of Mangrove Crabs in Kundur Waters

KARIMUN -- PT Timah remains committed to preserving the environment and coastal ecosystems in its operational areas by working together with local communities. One of the initiatives carried out is the restocking of mangrove crabs.

This environmental conservation effort by PT Timah is not only aimed at ecological impact but also benefits the economic growth of surrounding communities.

To help preserve the mangrove crab population, PT Timah through its Kundur Area Division released 400 mangrove crabs into the waters of Kundur, Karimun Regency, on Friday (June 13, 2025).

Mangrove crab restocking is a routine program carried out by the member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding in the Riau Islands Province as part of the company's marine reclamation efforts.

This initiative was welcomed enthusiastically by the local community, including Idris, a fisherman from Gemuruh Village. According to Idris, the restocking activity by PT Timah has already shown its benefits.

“We're very happy with this restocking program from PT Timah because we’ve really felt the benefits, especially for us traditional fishermen, as the crab population keeps increasing,” he said.

Idris added that the restocking also helps maintain the sustainability of the crab population, which in turn supports the ecosystem.

“This program is routinely carried out by PT Timah, and it helps protect the mangrove crabs. We hope PT Timah continues to grow and thrive so it can keep contributing to the community,” he added.

Meanwhile, PT Timah Tbk’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, explained that restocking plays an important role in restoring aquatic species populations, increasing biodiversity, and helping to maintain the balance of coastal ecosystem functions.

From an economic and social perspective, restocking can improve the welfare of coastal communities by ensuring the availability of crabs as a source of protein and as a livelihood for local fishermen, thereby increasing their income.

“Mangrove crabs have economic value and are highly sought after by the public, so their presence offers added value to fishermen beyond fish and shrimp. That’s why we’re working to help sustain their population so they can continue to thrive,” he said.
