Planting Mangroves, PT Timah Tbk's Efforts to Protect Coastal Ecosystems and Reduce the Impact of Climate Change

PANGKALPINANG -- Climate change has a major impact on human life. For this reason, PT Timah Tbk takes on a role in reducing the impact of climate change by carrying out various efforts to manage the environment in a sustainable manner. One of them, by promoting the planting of mangroves.

PT Timah Tbk's operational areas are dominated by islands, such as the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and the Riau Islands Province. PT Timah Tbk realizes that the formation of mangrove ecosystems is important in coastal areas because they are vulnerable to climate change. In addition, the mangrove ecosystem is also one of the pillars of the ecosystem in the coastal area.

PT Timah Tbk continues to promote mangrove planting as an effort to achieve net zero emission or carbon emission-free by 2060.

The mangrove ecosystem has many benefits for life including an effort to mitigate the climate crisis. As well as being able to absorb and store carbon in large quantities.

This coastal area conservation effort is the company's commitment to implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) values ??in supporting sustainable development.

This MIND ID mining industry holding member since 2010 has been planting mangroves with the Ikebana Foundation in the Rebo Coastal area, Bangka Regency.

Efforts to plant mangroves are also carried out consistently in the company's operational areas. PT Timah Tbk cooperates with community groups and the Regional Government in planting and rehabilitating mangroves.

In 2022, PT Timah Tbk planted 18,100 mangroves spread across several of the company's operational areas. Mangrove planting also continues to be encouraged until this year.

Last month PT Timah Tbk carried out mangrove planting twice, namely at Teluk Rubiah Beach, Tanjung Village, West Bangka Regency. In commemoration of Mangrove Day PT Timah Tbk also planted mangroves at Menuang Beach, Baskara Bakti Village, Central Bangka Regency.

Mangrove planting was also carried out in Kundur, Riau Archipelago Province, such as in Pangke Village, Meral District, and Karimun Regency.

PT Timah Tbk's Corporate Communications Head, Anggi Siahaan said, PT Timah Tbk is committed to carrying out sustainable environmental management by carrying out various programs, one of which is by planting mangroves.

"PT Timah Tbk is committed to supporting the government's program to realize net zero emission in the next 2060. The company is also not only planting but also involving coastal communities to jointly protect the mangrove ecosystem," said Anggi.

The Head of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service for the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, Agus Suryadi, appreciated the activities carried out by PT Timah Tbk. He assessed that mangrove planting must be encouraged to protect coastal ecosystems.

"We, from the Provincial Government of the Bangka Belitung Islands, really appreciate and thank PT Timah for carrying out this activity. So that people have a responsibility towards their environment, especially in coastal areas like this," Agus said during a mangrove planting activity in Central Bangka last July.

"Climate change is so fast due to very extreme natural phenomena. One way we can do this is by increasing blue carbon. Planting mangroves also has the ability to bind and release carbon. Of course, this is something that is useful for our lives in the future for our children and grandchildren," he said.

He hopes that other corporations in Bangka Belitung can carry out activities such as those carried out by PT Timah Tbk. So that mangrove planting can be done in Bangka Belitung.
