BANGKA -- Students of the Pemali Boarding School by PT Timah Tbk are not only provided with formal education but are also trained in practical skills through various positive programs, one of which involves utilizing the school dormitory land for productive farming.
Recently, students at Pemali Boarding School successfully harvested 135 kilograms of corn from the dormitory yard they managed independently in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province.
This gardening activity is part of the school’s hands-on learning program, designed as a form of environmental education while also supporting the national food security program.
“This program teaches us how to use our surroundings productively. It also helps build camaraderie among dorm residents since we carry out the activities collaboratively from the beginning until harvest,” said Hikmal Hamsyah Alfaridho, one of the students directly involved in the project.
According to Hikmal, the entire process from seeding, planting, and maintenance to harvesting was carried out by the students. He shared that he’s already familiar with farming activities, as he comes from a family of farmers.
“I’m used to farming at home, so when this program was introduced in the dorm, I was really excited. Especially since the corn harvest was quite satisfying—the corn was large and sweet,” he added.
Hikmal hopes the program will continue and expand to include other crops. “In the future, we plan to grow cucumbers. I hope this activity continues to grow because it brings a lot of benefits, both for us personally and as a small contribution to food security.”
This program is a tangible example of PT Timah Tbk’s commitment to supporting character development and self-reliance among young people while also helping shape a generation that cares about the environment and food security
