BANGKA SELATAN – In a bid to improve the welfare of fishermen in mining communities, PT Timah Tbk has once again extended its support to local fishing groups.
On Monday (February 3, 2025), PT Timah provided four outboard motors to the Samudera Indah Fishermen’s Group in Sukadamai, Tanjung Ketapang, Toboali District, Bangka Selatan Regency.
Yustra, the chairman of the Samudera Indah Fishermen’s Group, stated that before receiving assistance from PT Timah Tbk, the fishermen relied on small engines, which had deteriorated over time.
"Previously, we used smaller engines, but they are no longer sufficient for long-distance fishing. At best, we could only travel 10 to 15 miles," he said.
The fishermen expressed their gratitude for the outboard motors, as fish stocks in coastal areas have been depleting, forcing them to sail further in search of better catches.
"It's getting harder to find fish close to shore. Hopefully, with these motors, we can increase our income. A longer range means we won't be as affected by environmental changes in nearby waters," Yustra added.
For the fishermen, this assistance is especially meaningful as PT Timah Tbk is the first to provide support to the Samudera Indah Fishermen’s Group.
"We’ve never received assistance before—PT Timah is the first to help us. Thank you so much to PT Timah," he said.
Bujang Rambo, as he is affectionately known, also explained that the motors would be used on a rotational basis among the group members.
"To PT Timah, we wish you continued success, growth, and prosperity. Keep thriving, PT Timah!" he concluded.(*)
