Organizing Former Mining Land by Consistently Carrying Out Reclamation

PANGKALPINANG -- Post-mining land reclamation is one of the main priorities of PT Timah Tbk in carrying out its operations. Reclamation is carried out on land and sea because mining is carried out offshore and onshore.

The land reclamation program carried out by PT Timah is by planting or revegetating and reforestation. In 2023, PT Timah has reclaimed an area of ??299.47 hectares and in 2024 plans to reclaim an area of ??396.5 hectares.

In mid-2015-2023, PT Timah has carried out land reclamation of 3,183.01 hectares spread across Bangka Regency, West Bangka, Central Bangka, South Bangka, Belitung, East Belitung and Cross-Regency IUP.

Meanwhile, for sea reclamation, several programs run by Members of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding include sinking artificial reefs, planting mangroves, restocking mangrove crabs, installing abrasion barriers and others.

Members of the MIND ID mining industry holding carry out integrated reclamation starting from the planning stage, location survey, socialization, land management, planting, maintenance and success assessment.

Reclamation by planting on ex-mining land, planting fast-growing plants such as acacia, sengon, sea pine, ketapang. Planting, productive/economic plants such as oil palm, rubber, fruits. As well as planting local plants such as cashew nuts, pelawan, seruk/puspa, gelam, and others which are planted in between the main fast-growing plants.

Meanwhile, other forms of reclamation carried out by PT Timah are reclamations that are carried out in accordance with proposals and/or agreements from stakeholders such as tourist attractions, plant cultivation, and others.

Head of Corporate Communications of PT Timah, Anggi Siahaan said that PT Timah still has challenges in implementing reclamation, including the high level of land ownership conflicts in ex-mining areas.

"We are committed to implementing reclamation, but there are still obstacles faced, for example, land that has been reclaimed is reopened by miners without permission," said Anggi.

Nevertheless, Anggi said that PT Timah remains committed to continuing to implement responsible mining practices and ensuring that any environmental impacts caused can be managed properly.

"Reclamation is not only about returning ex-mining land to its original condition, but also about creating new value for the environment and society. We will continue to strive to be an environmentally responsible company and make a positive contribution to sustainable development," he said. (*)
