BANGKA BARAT -- The basketball court located in the Division Processing and Refinery residential area of PT Timah Tbk in West Bangka Regency has become a vibrant hub for sports activities, especially among basketball-loving teenagers.
With its safe and green environment, this PT Timah-owned facility has become a favorite spot for exercise. More than just a place to play, the court also serves as a training ground for young athletes who are serious about developing their basketball skills.
Every afternoon, dozens of teens participate in regular, intensive training sessions under the guidance of experienced coaches. They practice everything from basic techniques to game strategies and often hold internal matches to sharpen their abilities.
Nathan (16), one of the active trainees, shared that his love for basketball began with an invitation from friends.
"At first, I just wanted to sweat a little, then my friends invited me to play basketball. It turned out to be fun, and I got hooked. I also practiced a lot at school, and now I continue training here with a skilled coach," said the recent graduate of Santa Maria Junior High School.
Nathan has a big dream: to become a professional basketball player and represent Indonesia on the international stage.
"My goal is to become a national athlete, to compete abroad, and make my parents, school, and region proud," he said with enthusiasm.
Bryan (16) shared a similar passion, saying he fell in love with basketball because of its unique challenges.
"Basketball is hard but fun. You have to get the ball into a small hoop, all while being guarded by opponents. It requires speed, precision, and strong teamwork. I want to become a national athlete too," Bryan said.
Meanwhile, Dian (31), the coach training these teens, expressed his joy in mentoring the younger generation.
“These kids are just starting out. They need guidance and motivation. With regular training and frequent games, they’ll definitely grow. The key is consistency,” Dian explained.
He also expressed his gratitude to PT Timah for providing a basketball facility the community can use.
“We are very thankful to PT Timah. The kids now have a proper place to train. Hopefully in the future, PT Timah can add supporting facilities like nighttime lighting, so the kids can train in the evenings again like before,” he concluded.
