Not Only Artificial Reefs, PT TIMAH Also Deployed Squid Attractors in 2025 in East Belitung

BELITUNG — The commitment of PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk to preserving marine ecosystems and supporting the welfare of fishermen continues to be strengthened through various sustainable programs implemented in the Company’s operational areas.

In addition to deploying artificial reefs as part of marine environmental rehabilitation efforts, PT TIMAH also installed 36 units of squid attractors in the waters of Buku Limau, East Belitung Regency, in 2025.

The deployment of these squid attractors is expected to help increase fishermen’s catches in the Buku Limau waters. The attractors are designed as spawning media for squid to attach their eggs, thereby supporting population growth and maintaining the reproductive cycle of this marine species.

As is well known, squid is one of the fisheries commodities with high market value, and therefore this initiative is expected to increase the income of fishermen and coastal communities.

The Head of the Buku Limau Coastal Fishermen Group, Amirudin, stated that the deployment of squid attractors is highly needed by fishermen, as they previously had to travel far offshore to catch squid.

“With the deployment of these squid attractors, we no longer need to go far out to sea to catch squid. Previously, we had to travel quite far to get squid,” he said.

According to him, the presence of the squid attractors not only increases their catch but also reduces fuel consumption for fishing activities.

“In the past, when we had to sail far, we needed a lot of fuel, and fuel prices keep increasing. But with the squid attractors deployed just one mile away, it is closer and we can save on fuel costs,” he added.

In addition to serving as a potential fishing ground, the squid attractors also help ensure the sustainable availability of squid.

This program further reinforces PT TIMAH Tbk’s commitment to implementing sustainable mining principles. Through collaboration with fishermen groups and local stakeholders, PT TIMAH Tbk hopes to preserve marine ecosystems while strengthening the economy of coastal communities. (*)
