PANGKALPINANG -- Dozens of Mining Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering at Sriwijaya University enthusiastically listened as PT TIMAH representatives explained the company’s integrated business process, from upstream operations onward, during a visit to Graha Timah in Pangkalpinang on Monday (August 3, 2026).
The visit was part of the university’s Company Visit program under the theme “Transformative Knowledge into Professional Mining Practice,” attended by 48 students accompanied by two lecturers, Ir. Taufik Arif, S.T., M.S., IPM, and Ir. Aisyah Minzikrina Masbar Rus, B/Sc., M.T.
The students were welcomed by Bangka Area General Manager Ryan Andri and North Bangka Area Division Head Nopi Kohirozi, who presented an overview of PT TIMAH’s integrated business operations.
During the visit, PT TIMAH provided the students with the opportunity to learn about the company’s business processes, observe mining activities firsthand by visiting one of its mining sites, and gain insight into the tin processing and smelting operations at the Processing & Refinery Division in Mentok, West Bangka.
The collaboration between PT TIMAH and Sriwijaya University reflects the company’s commitment to supporting higher education and developing future human resources for the mining industry.
Taufik Arif, a lecturer in the Mining Engineering Study Program at Sriwijaya University, expressed his hope that the visit would further strengthen the partnership between academia and industry.
“In addition to learning about PT TIMAH’s mining operations, we also hope to strengthen the relationship between universities and the corporate sector,” Taufik said.
He explained that the primary objective of the company visit was to provide students with practical knowledge and firsthand exposure to the operations of a mining company.
“Through this visit, our students want to understand the tin smelting process and observe field operations directly so they gain practical experience in addition to their academic knowledge,” he said.
One of the participating students, Lulu Zahira Kamila Halim, admitted that after attending the presentation, she had just learned that PT TIMAH’s mining operations are conducted both on land and offshore.
“I just found out that PT TIMAH doesn’t only conduct mining operations on land but also has offshore mining operations,” Lulu said.
She added that she was excited to participate in the field visit and hoped to gain valuable insights into the tin mining industry.
“Now I have a better understanding of how tin mining is carried out, and I think it’s incredibly interesting. I’m looking forward to learning new things and understanding the fundamentals of tin mining because in the future we’ll study production and smelting processes. This experience will be a valuable foundation for me,” she concluded.
