PANGKALPINANG – PT Timah Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting the community's welfare, particularly fishermen in its operational areas.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, PT Timah Tbk has provided social security protection through BPJS Employment for 959 fishermen in Bangka Belitung and the Riau Islands from 2022 to 2023.
The fishermen receiving social security protection from PT Timah, a member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, are spread across Bangka, West Bangka, South Bangka, and the Riau Islands.
This initiative by PT Timah is a tangible manifestation of the company’s commitment to providing social and economic protection for fishermen, who work daily in the high-risk fishing sector.
PT Timah's Head of Corporate Communications, Anggi Siahaan, explained that since 2022, PT Timah has facilitated hundreds of fishermen in its operational areas to obtain social security protection through BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.
Fishermen are among the most vulnerable groups to work-related risks, from accidents at sea to unforeseen health threats.
"Realizing this, PT Timah Tbk has taken the initiative to provide social security for fishermen by enrolling them in BPJS Employment. This protection is intended to give fishermen and their families a sense of security in carrying out their profession," said Anggi.
This program is the result of collaboration between PT Timah Tbk and BPJS Employment. Through the program, PT Timah Tbk pays the fishermen’s membership fees, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of protection provided by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan without financial burden.
Meanwhile, Abdul Shoheh, Head of BPJS Employment Pangkalpinang, stated that this program reflects PT Timah's concern not only for workers but also for the surrounding community by offering protection against work-related accidents and fatalities.
"PT Timah cares about the fishermen in its operational areas. The assistance provided is not only in the form of fishing gear but also BPJS Employment. Fishermen face risks of accidents and death during their activities, so social protection is necessary," he said.
With this protection, PT Timah has helped safeguard the economy of families when their breadwinners experience misfortunes.
According to him, PT Timah is a pioneer in providing BPJS Employment protection and continues to do so sustainably for fishermen and other vulnerable groups.
"Accidents can happen at any time. With this social security protection, if misfortune strikes, the family or heirs can continue with the compensation received, whether for business capital or children’s education. This enables them to become economically independent," he added.
He hopes that PT Timah will expand BPJS Employment coverage to other beneficiaries, such as those in the agricultural sector, small businesses (UMKM), and other industries.
Last weekend, PT Timah, in collaboration with BPJS Employment, handed over death benefit claims for fishermen under PT Timah’s CSR program to the heirs during a meeting at PT Timah's main conference room.
The death benefit claims for the fishermen under PT Timah's CSR program were presented by PT Timah’s Head of CSR Division, Rahmat Taufik, and the Head of BPJS Employment Pangkalpinang, Abdul Shoheh, to the heirs of Rasyidi, Sumapermila, and Rizon, who are the heirs of Erlansyah. (*)
