Mining and Energy Day, The Strategic Role of Tin as a National Economic Driver

BANGKA BELITUNG – As one of the largest tin producers in the world, Indonesia plays a significant role in the global industrial landscape. Tin is a critical mineral commodity required in various industries.

Tin also supports the national economy, especially in tin-producing regions such as the Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

The tin industry creates jobs, increases regional income, and contributes to national foreign exchange reserves. Through high-quality tin exports, Indonesia competes in the international market and strengthens its position as one of the world's leading tin producers.

PT Timah Tbk, as one of Indonesia’s largest tin mining companies and a representative of the nation, is committed to implementing Good Mining Practices in its business processes to ensure sustainable tin mining.

As a member of the Mining Industry Holding, MIND ID, PT Timah has taken several strategic steps to ensure that its operations prioritize not only economic aspects but also environmental and social responsibilities.

To maintain the sustainability of natural resources, PT Timah is actively reclaiming post-mining lands. Reforestation and ecosystem restoration programs continue to minimize the environmental impact of mining activities.

Additionally, the company supports the development of the local economy by involving communities in its business processes through partnership programs.

In terms of social and environmental responsibility, PT Timah continues to empower local communities to develop their potential.

Beyond sustainable practices, PT Timah continues to innovate by developing environmentally friendly mining technologies. The company also supports tin down streaming efforts aligned with Indonesia’s 2045 Vision.

Anggi Siahaan, Head of Corporate Communications at PT Timah, stated that the company also promotes transparency and good governance in the tin supply chain.

"On this Mining and Energy Day, we are reminded that the mining sector, particularly tin, will continue to be a cornerstone for Indonesia. However, given the challenges, there needs to be synergy between the government, companies, and communities to safeguard the sustainability of this sector," Anggi said.

PT Timah Tbk remains committed to contributing to national development, not only through tin production and export but also by ensuring the sustainability of tin as one of Indonesia’s strategic commodities. (*)
