MediaMIND 2026 Outreach: MIND ID and PT TIMAH Invite Bangka Belitung Journalists to Explore Stories Behind Indonesia’s Mineral Wealth

PANGKALPINANG -- MIND ID, together with PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk, held a MediaMIND 2026 outreach event at Graha Timah in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026).

The MediaMIND 2026 outreach event was attended by journalists from various media outlets across Bangka Belitung as well as university students. The event featured PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk Division Head of CSR Rahmat Taufik, MIND ID Corporate Communication representative M. Richard, and ANTARA journalist Yusuf Dzul Ikram as speakers.

MediaMIND serves as a collaborative platform for journalists, academics, observers, and the public to present perspectives, analyses, and inspiring stories about the management of Indonesia’s mineral resources.

Carrying the theme “From the Earth for the Nation’s Sovereignty,” MediaMIND 2026 invites participants to explore stories about how Indonesia’s mineral wealth is responsibly managed to strengthen national industries, support the energy transition, create added value through downstream processing, and improve community welfare.

The competition features six subthemes: Economy and Investment; ESG & Green Mining; Downstream Processing; Industrialization and Indonesia’s Mineral Security; Social Contributions to Communities; and Transformation and Innovation.

During the event, the speakers discussed various strategic issues related to the mining industry, ranging from corporate performance and the extractive industry’s contribution to the economy to Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs, downstream processing, environmental management, and opportunities to explore these issues through journalistic work.

MIND ID Corporate Communication representative M. Richard said the mining industry is currently entering a new phase centered on downstream processing, which has become an important part of Indonesia’s mining industry roadmap. Mineral management should not end with mining activities but should continue through processing into higher-value products.

“The new phase we are building is integrated downstream processing. The development of downstream industries is also part of Indonesia’s efforts to increase the economic value of its natural resources while strengthening the country’s technological and industrial capabilities,” he said.

For this reason, mining issues offer a broad range of perspectives for journalistic coverage. The media can explore various aspects of the mining industry, not only commodity production but also industrial transformation, downstream processing, environmental issues, local economies, and the industry’s contribution to development.

Meanwhile, speaking from the perspective of journalistic development, ANTARA journalist Yusuf Dzul Ikram said the number of entries submitted to the MediaMIND competition continues to increase. In 2026, a total of 736 entries were submitted to the competition.

“The number of entries continues to grow. This shows that more people are becoming interested in mining issues from a journalistic perspective,” he said.

He expressed hope that MediaMIND would encourage the creation of journalistic works that are not only informative but also offer different perspectives, more in-depth reporting, and diverse stories about Indonesia’s mining industry.

During the outreach event, PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk Division Head of CSR Rahmat Taufik also presented the company’s performance developments over the past several years, covering both operational and financial aspects.

He said PT TIMAH’s performance has shown a positive trend, as reflected in the company’s net profit of approximately IDR 2.71 trillion in the first half of 2026.

In addition to operational and financial performance, Rahmat highlighted various PT TIMAH Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs targeting communities surrounding the company’s operational areas. These programs cover a range of sectors, including education, health, the economy, social and cultural development, and community empowerment.

“So, we do not simply mine; we also strive to deliver benefits to surrounding communities. Through our CSR programs, we seek to reach a broader range of beneficiaries so that these initiatives can contribute to the economy in Bangka Belitung,” he said.

The outreach event received a positive response from members of the media in Bangka Belitung. Riki, a journalist who attended the event, said he gained valuable new insights from the MediaMIND 2026 outreach session.

“We welcome this event because we gained a great deal of knowledge as well as some fun prizes. MediaMIND is certainly an exciting competition, and we hope it will continue in the years ahead,” he said.

Similarly, Elza, another journalist, said she was interested in participating in MediaMIND after having also submitted her work to the competition the previous year.

“I am very interested in participating in MediaMIND 2026, and I also took part last year. We hope competitions like this can be held more than once a year because mining issues, particularly tin mining, have a significant impact on the economy of communities in Bangka Belitung,” she said.

Echoing these views, Zambiatun Hasanah, a student at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bangka Belitung (Unmuh Babel), said the outreach event had broadened students’ understanding of mining governance.

Zambiatun said the event gave her a new perspective on industrial downstream processing and its long-term implications for the future. She believes university students have a moral responsibility to help promote transparency in public information.

“As university students, we must play an active role in observing transparency in mining management and help educate the wider community through social media platforms,” she said.

During the event, PT TIMAH also presented awards to several journalists and media outlets in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province that were recognized for being active, productive, interactive, and achieving broad news coverage. (*)
