Mangroves as Coastal Defenses, PT Timah Plants Thousands of Seedlings Through CSR Program

PANGKALPINANG -- PT Timah Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental conservation through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program by planting mangroves along coastal areas.

The mangrove planting initiative represents the company’s concrete step in supporting coastal ecosystem rehabilitation while also serving as a climate change mitigation effort.

In the first semester of 2025, as a member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, PT Timah planted 11,000 mangrove trees across three coastal regions. The efforts included planting 3,000 trees in Tanjung Gemuk Village, Rangsang District, Meranti Regency; 3,000 trees in Sawang Laut Village, Kundur District, Karimun Regency; and additional mangroves along Tanjung Labun Beach, Serdang Village, South Bangka Regency.

The initiative was carried out together with local communities, with thousands of mangrove seedlings expected to help curb coastal erosion. Mangroves also serve as natural habitats for various marine species that have economic value for surrounding communities.

PT Timah Tbk’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, said the mangrove planting initiative is a tangible contribution by the company toward environmental sustainability.

“Mangroves play a vital role in maintaining coastal ecosystems. Through this TJSL program, the company hopes not only to restore the environment but also to provide economic benefits for coastal communities,” said Anggi.

Coastal residents welcomed the program, noting that mangrove planting not only helps control erosion but also creates new opportunities for environmentally based businesses.

Chairman of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in Limus Hamlet, Tanjung Labun Beach, South Bangka Regency, Dody Syahrial, emphasized the importance of mangrove planting in preventing erosion and protecting the eroding shoreline.

“The erosion in this area has been severe, and this mangrove planting is a smart solution by PT Timah for rehabilitation. We truly appreciate what PT Timah has done to protect the coastal ecosystem,” he said.

According to Dody, coastal rehabilitation through mangrove planting not only prevents erosion but can also be developed into sustainable tourism and improve community welfare.

“In the future, we plan to develop this area into mangrove education tourism and a conservation center in South Bangka. With mangroves, ecosystems will be preserved, fish catches will increase, and this will positively impact the local economy,” Dody explained.

PT Timah’s mangrove planting efforts also align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goals of protecting marine ecosystems and taking climate action. Moving forward, the company is committed to continuing similar initiatives in other areas as part of its sustainable TJSL environmental programs.
