Learning About Tin Smelting and Processing, AKIPBA Students Visit PT Timah's Processing and Smelting Division

WEST BANGKA -- A total of 28 students from the Bukit Asam Mining Industrial Community Academy (AKIPBA) made an industrial visit to PT Timah's Processing and Smelting Division at the Mentok Metallurgical Unit, West Bangka Regency.

The presence of dozens of students along with four supervisory lecturers was welcomed directly by the Head of the Processing and Smelting Division of PT Timah Sofian Simangungsong, at Wisma Sriwijaya, Wednesday (29/5/2024).

AKIPBA Deputy Director Afriansah said that AKIPBA Students visited the Processing and Smelting Division because they wanted to provide education and an overview of the tin processing and smelting process to increase students' knowledge.

Currently, he said, AKIPBA has three study programs, namely the Processing, Maintenance, and Operation study programs. To improve students' abilities, apart from providing competence on campus, it also needs to be accompanied by insight into the industrial world.

"Our aim is to visit PT Timah's Processing and Smelting sector, because these three study programs have a job description that is suitable for students' knowledge, because here there is the science of metallurgical extraction, for smelting tin ore, processing tin ore, processing minerals," he said.

He said, this area is also equipped with complete equipment such as heavy equipment for transporting minerals and materials. Smelting and processing are carried out in one place and maintenance of mechanical operational equipment is also carried out here.

"Our hope, which is also MIND ID's hope, is that these students will have insight and knowledge about the tin smelting process," he said.

He said that AKIPBA students are human resources who already have knowledge about mining who can later have a career in mining companies in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Processing and Smelting Division, Sofian Simangungsong, explained directly the processing and smelting process at PT Timah, followed by a discussion session.

"Everyone is very happy to be able to visit the Processing and Smelting Division, we hope we can work together well. Hopefully, this visit will be useful in broadening AKIPBA students' knowledge about mining," said Sofian. (*)
