Learning About Tin Processing and Smelting, Dozens of Polman Babel Students Visit PT Timah

Bangka Barat -- A total of 38 mechanical engineering students from Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic (Polman Babel) conducted a field study visit to the Processing and Refinery Division of PT Timah Tbk.

The group, led by supervising lecturer Harwadi, was welcomed by the Division Head of Processing and Refinery, Sofian Simangunsong, at the Sriwijaya Guest House building on Wednesday, (25/6/2025).

During the visit, Sofian Simangunsong presented an overview of the work processes in the Processing and Refinery Division of PT Timah and opened a discussion session for the students.

PT Timah frequently receives visits from various educational institutions wishing to observe firsthand the tin refining and processing activities. This initiative is also part of PT Timah’s commitment to supporting the education sector.

In addition to hosting student field visits, PT Timah also offers internship opportunities for students according to their respective fields of study. This serves as a form of synergy between the academic world and the business sector to enhance the quality of human resources.

Supervising lecturer Harwadi expressed his appreciation to PT Timah for giving the students an opportunity to learn directly. He stated that Polman Babel has a close and long-standing relationship with PT Timah.

"We are very impressed and honored by the warm welcome. Polman Babel is part of PT Timah—there has always been a strong connection. We’re glad to hear there are internship opportunities here too, and we hope the students take advantage of this chance to gain valuable experience," he said.

One of the students, Auges, shared his interest in learning about tin processing and refining at PT Timah.

"This visit to the Processing and Refinery Division was very beneficial and helpful. The mentors explained everything clearly and made it easy to understand. I hope this kind of program continues in the future," he said.

Similarly, Audi, a mechanical engineering student at Polman Babel, said the materials presented were easy to follow and provided her with new knowledge during the visit.

"Visiting here was exciting because the mentors were able to answer questions in detail. I hope PT Timah continues to thrive and stays motivated," she said.
